Project 4x4 Commuter Mazda

everything for disc brakes will swap over

Serious? I am as giddy as a school girl if this is true!

The axle I am getting apparently "went out" according to my friend. What he described to me was that it started grinding and howling. My guess is either an outer or inner bearing. Either way thats a pretty easy fix assuming that nothing got damaged (crossing my finigers). I am going to re-gear it anyway and put all new bearings, brakes, lines, pads rotors calipers etc ect.

I'll need perches, spring plates, shock mounts, u-bolts, pads, rotors, calipers, misc. other mounting hardware, a master over haul kit, No-Slip locker, and 4.56 (or should I go 4.88) gears.

yep, it's sort of a PITA since you have to remove the axleshafts to do it. but if you're doing a gear swap/locker install/etc., you'll have everything apart anyhow.

there's a thread on it somewhere around here

i've been checking c-list everyday for the last few weeks trying to find an EX rear axle in bad shape that i can get the disc brake stuff off of. i dont think it'll swap over to your 28 spline 8.8 though (just in case that was what you were thinking)

yeah i'm using a drum brake housing for my disc brake setup on my 8.8.. that's still not in my truck

No, I want to swap disc brakes from an explorer axle to a drum brake explorer axle that I am getting for free.

Yes, it will be all apart anyway, and I'll build it up complete 100% (including the gear swap) before I actually place it beneath my truck. There won't be much down time, but I will spend plenty of time up to that point prepping the axle for its new home :icon_thumby:

ummm yeah, aint that the same thing i said??? i'm using a drum brake axle, w/ the backing plates and all that jazz of a disc brake setup.. to do a disc swap on it. :icon_thumby:

You are correct, I was clarifying for Eddie.

Monstaliner almost here, hope to knock that project out this weekend.

Also gonna have to get a new radiator, mine is leaking from the plastic end tank seam to the aluminum part. Looking for an all aluminum...may have found one on ebay.

how much for the radiator? i've been thinking about getting an all aluminum, maybe higher capacity. that way, i'll have one less thing to worry about and i can use it when i swap in my 4.0

I think its the same capacity, but its 3 cores instead of 2, I'll post the link when I find it again. Its in another thread I started somewhere....:icon_confused:

Look what came today:

My weekend will be busy to say the least if the weather is nice. If the weather is bad, maybe I'll mod my centerlink or fab the new idler arm.

I'm liking this stuff more and more, and if it retains much of its glossy-ness I am seriously contemplating doing 80% of the whole truck in Monstaliner. The factory black paint won't last long either with lots of wheeling/mud/trees.

They say its UV permanent and won't fade. I expect it to though, maybe in 5 years. We'll see how it holds up.

Sadly no, its a chevy D44 thats been narrowed and going beneath my dad's Jeep instead of his D30 he has now.

Wish he'd hurry up, and maybe I could start mine :icon_rofl:
