Can you run on just a coil, distributor and carb? Having issues with smooth idle and acceleration.

It was done exactly that way for many years.

Just be aware... It's probably not legal in some states. For offcroad use only sound be good most anywhere.

OK. I'm good where I'm at legally. I'm having issues with my setup for some reason. Is there any way I could get a quick run down of equipment and connections? Thanks

I've never seen a carbureted 2.9 or one without EEC.

@Aimwell do you have a 2.8 or a 2.9? Your profile suggests a 2.9 but this is posted in the 2.8 section. That will make a difference in what you can use for a distributor.

I only looked at the forum that the question was posted in.

Looks like you will need to find a 72-74 Mercury Capri or '74 Mustang II for a donor - or CARDONE 31966, CARDONE 31968

and keep spare points in the glove box. they like to go out on dark nights when you are not near a light post or any other living thing that can hold a light source for you

I have extra points and condensors. I have a points distributor, msd coil and new generic 2150 carb. I'm here now and found no spark again. I am changing points now

Ha. Sorry, I interpreted your question as "can I do this?" instead of "I've already done it and am having problems"........

Have you looked into a Pertronix points eliminator module?

I have not, but I would love to know where to get them!

I think if you have a Capri/Mustang II points distributor made by Bosch, this is the kit you need:

My buddy had a Pertronix module in his 302 and it worked great. The only bummer about them is the funky spark plug wire style which can be harder to find locally.

I do have the Bosch distributor. I have placed an order for a dui distributor from performance distributors. This is cheaper so I may order this and cancel my order. So, I would only replace points for the pertronix and keep everything else the same?

That's correct, drop the Pertronix module in and go.

I would not expect to see the DUI distributor anytime soon. From my understanding they are remanufactured ones that come from junkyards or core returns from parts stores...and if they're not getting any cores... they have nothing to rebuild and send out. Sad state of affairs in the 2.8 world. Even if you could round one up, you would then need the Duraspark module and harness for it. Easier to just run what ya got.
