Points style distributor

Awesome! I will update asap! Thank you all!

are you getting power to the coil? power out of the coil? what are the points gapped at and is it what they should be gapped to?

I will let you know. I'm working on it now

I had a Pertronix Billet Flamethrower distributor in my 351 at first and the centrifugal advance had an 8 second delay built into it so I replaced it with a Napa Duraspark that works right but isn't shiny. I've used the drop in Pertronix units to replace points with excellent luck. Back when cars had points, we'd quite often have a recent tune up towed back in when the condenser died. Breaker points belong in antiques.

I have the pertronix ordered! The points will be gone within a week! I appreciate all the help! I will post again once I get it complete. I did find out that my compression is only 105 psi across the board on a cold engine.

you don't even need the engine running to test spark on points style sytems.
set the follower on a low point so the points are closed, apply power then reach in and open the points. use something plastic/nonconductive.
have a plug wire in the coil going to a grounded plug, it should fire.

can set the timing without the engine running too. close enough to get it running.
manually crank engine to desired advance then rotate distributor until points open/sparks.
be sure to have cylinder 1 on both crank and distributor match.

don't forget the condenser, and if the coil uses a ballast resistor.

That is awesome info. Thanks for the knowledge

when in trouble, i used a match book lid to set the gap on the points on my ghia and bugs

I was told a debit card would work. Is that too much gap?

Probably, most were .017 - .019". If the gap is too wide, the dwell will be too low and the condenser won't have time to fully charge but it will run. Dwell is the number of degrees that the points are closed, if you didn't know. And assuming you're younger than I am, you probably didn't.

as bad as my finances are, a debit card would be just perfect :icon_rofl:

as Walt stated, it's a bit wide.

Any info for my compression being at 105 psi? Could this be contributing to my ignition problem? Too low of compression to properly combust?

you said 105 is even across the board though, right? compression doesn;t cause combustion on a gas engine, thats a diesel engine. yours is evenly low so it should run fine and maybe just feel a little slower than normal. i don;t know what you need for your numbers but if its even, its not a leaking headgasket or something like that

Awesome! I was worried about that

It will run "okay" with 105 psi if that is testing it cold, though it really should be 130 psi at a minimum.

Ditto on that.

These two resistor should work okay with your points distributor, used them on both my points and duraspark.
