I got the tranny out and apart. I found out the shift forks were worn ground down for some reason which wouldn't let me push the collar far enough to get into gear. When I drained the fluid it looked like silver milk, there was so much aluminum powder in the fluid it was gritty. The PO had the tranny rebuilt less than 1000 miles ago, it looks like they put shift forks out of a 3.0 or 2.3 tranny in my 4.0, because they werent big enough to fit over the collars properly, but I am not sure. I will have another tranny this weekend so I can compare.

All I got was dark cell phone pics of the gear stacks. They looked brand new, the syncros and everything look awesome.

I picked up a tranny. Came from a totaled 99, and t has less than 100k on it. I popped the shift plate off and inspected the forks, syncros, and gears. It looks perfect. The truck sat in the weeds with no wheels for a while, so the tranny case is all corroded, but it is the fluid was still red inside:yahoo:.

Here it is, sitting in my dorm room until I go home this weekend to put it in.lol

Can you clean up and reuse the old gears and synchros with the new shift forks and case? Basically take the best pieces of both transmissions and build a new one.

just reuse the gears and synchros , change the forks to ford ones ( an M5OD is an M5OD , all the internals are the same ) and slap her back in , there should be no damage to the gears or anything , as there is no actual gear metal to metal contact in the trans except the fork to collar

I could but I have a different plan since I already have the trans off and apart.

I do plan to use parts from both trannies to make one complete trans. The only thing wrong with my old trans is the shift forks. I could just swap the shift plate off the new trans and call it a day, but if you look close you will see that the new trans is from a 2wd 4 banger. The 2.3, 2.5 and 3.0 M50D's are geared lower than the and 4.0 M50D but have a different bolt pattern. I am going to swap all the internals from the 2wd tranny (except the output shaft) into my 4.0 case. So the end product will be a 4.0/2.5 hybrid M50D trans, it will be geared lower than my original 4.0 in first second and third, but 4th will still be 1:1 and fifth will still be .79:1, so I will still be able to keep the rpms down at highway speeds and have kick ass torque at take off/ off road.

3.40 / 2.05 / 1.31 / 1.00 / 0.79 (4.0L Engines)
3.72 / 2.20 / 1.50 / 1.00 / 0.79 (All Other Engines)

Having a 3.72 first gear and 3.73 rear end will be like the having the original 3.40 first and the 4.10 rear end I wish I had

I did a little math to figure the final crawl with the hybrid M50D
(first/sec/third all in low range)
34.41/20.35/13.88 (Hybrid M50D w/ 3.73 rear end)
34.57/20.84/13.32 (Stock 4.0 M50D w/ 4.10 rear end)

In third gear I will actually have lower final crawl than the stock 4.0 M50D w/ 4.10's :yahoo:

Ford ones? I thought all M50D's were made by Mazda? Are the earlier shift forks made of steel instead of aluminum or something?
