Plug tools

I carried an old cheap set of victor tire plug tools for years, the reamer is finally so worn that it's smooth so I retired it.

I just bought 2 different little kits from the parts store, used them on some old tires and both bent, one the handle just fell right off. Nothing is quality anymore. I think one was "slime" brand, the other victor.

Are there any good tire plug kits/tools still out there?

And yes I know plugs are old fashion and tires should be "patched" but this is for emergency repairs on the side of the road/trail as far as goat is concerned, yadda yadda liability whatnot. Never had a plug fail in my life.

I just want a kit I can count on...

I tried using a plug a few weeks ago. It didnt work, so I assumed it was too old (it had been in my glove box for a few years), so I bought a new kit. Same thing. It was only a nail that poked a hole in my tire, and I plugged and patched tires for 2.5 years at a brake shop, so I know how to use it. Finally ended up using 3 plugs to slow the leak down slow enough for me to get to the closest used tire shop. He laughed at my plug and said they "don't make'em like they used to"

I've had a set of plug tools for like almost ever... I broke a plug installer stem once and bought two replacement stems. One to fix the tool and one as a back up. I still have the spare one. I bought them from the Tech Tire Repair guy that use to come fill our tire repair cabinet.

There is another one I would trust... Safety Seal

The name safety seal keeps popping up. They have a kit for around $60 bucks, which is about 1000% more than anyone else (the slime kit was 6 bucks), but I don't wanna be stranded and have my plug tool break... think I may go with safety seal if no one else has a cheaper alternative.

My old victor set lasted 20 years and dozens of plugs... But stuff was just better back then...

I dont know the brand but i used a cheap set on a sidewall of my ranger work truck. Two seals later installed at the same time and it hasnt leaked yet. Ive always been told that tire shops wont repair sidewalls because the seal wont last. Hmmmm.
That was almost two years ago. Its been sitting for one of the two years, still holding air.

I changed a set of all 4 38" tires once with a 5 gallon bucket, two tire spoons, and lighter fluid in a shed in the middle of the night. I paid my dues.

No... I keep a spare tire under the bed. If needed, I install it. Then I fix the tire the next day at work.

Ooh my look at this fancy nancy... he has "spare" tires... and doesn't need to pay 75 bucks for a shop to dismount, patch, remount, and balance the tire. Me oh my. Ill take my humble plug kit and allow only your majesty to ride upon these roads.

Also can i eat this rotisserie chicken i got from wawa in your yard? Yea wawa has rotisserie chickens! Isn't that mind boggling? Im suckling the juice out of the bag. Its like liquid KFC... seriously... a whole chicken, from wawa! A WHOLE CHICKEN FROM WAWA!

I use my plug tool on tires that are close to on the way out... or in an emergency. My daughters were pretty rough on tires... they got several plugs.

If I picked up a nail in my truck tires... I would put my spare on and have the tire patched. At least until they're closer to replacement in tread wear.

I keep an air compressor and a plug kit cause it will get me home. I don't deny the patch/plugs that sno showed are better, they are. But plugs work on the side of the road and here's my argument against sno's fancy patches...


I've never had a plug fail and I've done dozens. Plug can be done anywhere, a patch can't. So why... no plug of mine has ever failed, so what benefit does taking the tire off for that goofy thing provide besides shops are not allowed to use plugs?

Well the plugs have got better over the years... can't say I've had any fail either.

On my expensive tires... I just hate making the hole bigger and further damaging the cords. I usually ask for just a patch and not one with a plug for the same reasons.

Trust me... if it came right down to it... I would plug my tires and still sleep at night.

I started using the fancy plug/patches on my ATV tires. It’s easy to rip a plug out offroad. It’s not so easy to rip a plug/patch out.
