I recently got my old ranger back from my mom's house where it has been sitting for the last four years. She said it had been running very bad and parked it when she got a new car. With gas prices the way they are I decided to take it back and get it running good to use as my daily driver/beater.

It is a 91 with the 2.3 and a 5-speed. When I got it back, I changed the fluids, plugs, wires, filter, and charged the battery and now it runs, but not very good. It idles horribly and the SES light is on. After pulling the codes this is what I came up with:

18 - iginition tach signal erradic
28 - IDM low or right coil pack failure
29 - Insufficient input from VSS
41 - HO2S circuit indicates system lean
48 - large vacuum leak or coil circuit failure
66 - MAF circuit below minimum voltage
88 - SPOUT circuit fail

I am going to continue researching these codes, but I was hoping that the hive mind could tell me if I have deciphered these codes correctly for my vehicle/engine. Also I am wondering if any of these codes are common and if so what are the common fixes for them or most likely place to look for them.

Thanks in advance
Victor

Stand back Vic...it's gunna BLOW!!! :fie:

Just kidding, this sounds lilke huge short, or failure of the Ignition Control Module(ICM) or Powertrain Control Module(compter).

Does no one else have any input? Would a new ICM fix the majority of these problems?

Yes, take the ICM to autozone and they will test it. Willing to bet $$ it will fail. I had several of the same problems and when it tested, it failed. I replaced and problem gone. I also have the same year and engine ('91, 2.3L).

The following are related (I'd bet) to the ICM:

18 - iginition tach signal erradic
28 - IDM low or right coil pack failure
48 - large vacuum leak or coil circuit failure
88 - SPOUT circuit fail

And, I'm betting you have a MAF failure/problem because of:

66 - MAF circuit below minimum voltage

Try cleaning it out with MAF Cleaner.

This would point to O2 sensor:
41 - HO2S circuit indicates system lean

Located on between the exhaust manifold and the cat, only one on your setup.

This is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (I think), located on the rear axle differential:
29 - Insufficient input from VSS

Is your ABS light on the dash on too?

Also, if you are having idle problems, check your vacuum lines. You definatly have a problem with the ICM, but checking the vac lines would be a good idea too.
