Ok where to start? Im wondering if I have a bad PCM. I was chasing a EEV IV code 31 KOEO. I used this link EGR/EVP Codes 31/32/33/34/35 Troubleshooting - SBFTECH.com to go by. I did all the tests and the results point to a bad PCM. Also performed a KOER test and my Bronco started smoking like all hell and hasnt stopped since. And before the test it idled fine with a hint of richness. So now Im at a loss as to why she started during the test and hasnt stopped. Does this seem to point out bad PCM? Also have a code 18 in memory that is always there even if I clear it. Timing advances like it is suppose to and idles smooth. Still have the code even with a new ignition control module. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im ready to drive this truck of a cliff with me in it. Thanks again

Code 18 is when the computer doesn't get a "reply" once the signal is sent to the coil. This can happen when the spout is removed. If yours is in place and you are sure the advance is happening, then it may be a problem in the return wiring. I believe there is a resistor that can blow and cause this, in the return wiring.

Your code 31 obviously deals with the EGR. EGR can also be why your engine is smoking. What have you done to check the EGR and it's position sensor? The EGR relay as well?

Well I started out and removed the EGR. It was seized and carbed up pretty bad. I cleaned it and it functioned ok. Then checked voltage to the egr and read 4.6 to 4.7 volts, within spec. Then measures voltage out of EVP sensor to PCM. Voltage was .4 volts give or take, again in spec. Then checked resistance in wire from EVP sensor to PCM and resistance was 0.0 ohms even with wiggle test, again within specs. So the only thing I can think is the computer is the problem. Code 31 indicates no voltage detected by computer but all the components are working, so it has to be the computer...right? And if the Computer is messing up there can it be malfunctioning in other places? And could a bad PCM cause the random smoking out exhaust and random rich smelling exhaust? Like I said it seemed to be running fine for a while until I did the KOER test and now it smokes more than George Burns.

Well I checked evp again and I'm Actually getting 1.5 volts out EVP to the computer. So wouldnt that trigger a code 34 evp voltage above closed limit code? Does anyone have a troubleshooting guide for the egr solenoids? I was going ohm them out but wondering what the correct limts are. And how would I check the EGR relay and where would I find it:icon_twisted: I dont wanna buy a new PCM if it is not needed. Again thanks for any help

Well pulled the computer to take in to order new one. Long story short, my 85 Bronco II had an 83 Ranger computer in it. Im no rocket scientist but wouldn't that cause problems?
