i have a 85 ranger 2wd 5speed and im putting a 88 model ranger rear end in it..what i have now is a 3.08 gear and im getting a 3.73 gear.. im wanting my speedometer to read right and i was told i needed the plastic speedometer drive gears out of the 88 donor ranger.. my question is , where is it and what do i need to do to remove it and be able to install it in my 85 so everything reads right. thanks for any help

It's mounted in the tailshaft of the transmission

Follow the speedometer cable.

You'll need a 1/4drive 7/16" socket and extension and a ratchet
to turn it with to remove the hold down bolt.

Once you yank the speedo drive out of the tailshaft the speedo
gear is retained to the drive assembly with a steel clip you can
either grab it with a pair of pliers or pry it off with a screwdriver.

after that the gear basically slides off.

Practice on your own truck.

It sounds easy because it is.

One day on a bet at the locak U-pull-it
I filled a 3lb coffee can with speedo gears in enough under
an hour that I was actually sipping my second quart of gatoraid.

That was the same day a friend bet me $20 I couldn't have a
Ranger fuel sending unit in my hand in under three minutes.

It never occoured to him that I'd use tin snips on the straps
and simply pry the lockring off the tank and be done in under 2min.

Unbolt it? are you kidding?
