Does rattle can paint jobs last at all? i wanna paint my truck because my old paint is wearing off and is starting to look crappy. But i dont have alot budjet wise for this. i have constantly heard of u guys doing rattle can paint jobs, but never considered it myself because of the asumption it would look crappy. I dont really want just a flat spray painted look, i would prefer some shine to it. Also, the truck is a '89 ranger that is black with the red decals... but the decals are pealing off. Its a nice design and colour combination, so i wanna keep it. So can this be painted on?

Is there a way i can have a paint job done for somewhat cheap that will last more than a year? What would i be lookign at to get a shop to do this? Any opinions or ideas are greatly apreciated. thanks

If you prep it and know what your doing, yes it can be done, but you would have to good with a rattle can! You can get a cheap good paint job from like Macco for like 250-300. My neighbor just got his s-10 extended cab 4x4 painted with metal flake blue for 275.00 out the door and it looks great. That's no body work and expect some over spray. but it's cheap with clear coat to last a while.

Either way prep-work is key.

If you go to maaco...do your own sanding, trim removal, any body work, and masking...and you should have a decent paint job that will last a while.

Same goes for a DIY rattle can job. Sand it down, prime it, and do several light coats of paint and you should have a decent paint job. Rattle can paint generally isnt as durable as automotive paint, but its easier to do touch-ups...you can always wet-sand and spray back over that spot...

I have painted 2.5 tractors with a rattlecan, the first in '01, second in '04ish and the half of one about '07.

The first two I used aftermarket paint because the original make isn't in business anymore. It has turned kind of dull, but still stuck to where it isn't a high traffic area. They way they sit in the shed they catch all the afternoon sun. The half of one is a Deere and I used Deere paint and it is still pretty shiny. Not like a new car paint job but still pretty nice for a tractor... for what that is worth.

Yea, tractor/machine & implement paint holds up very well. It's pretty thick and is one of the more durable spray paints I have come across. The draw backs are that they usually only come in a few colors (tractor colors) like Deere green or yellow, IH red, CAT Yellow, Ford tractor grey, etc. But if you want something that can hold up to a little more roughness than standard rattle can stuff... I'd go that way.

I'm thinking about using the Rust Stop Machine & Implement paint from ACE, most likely in International Blue or Ford grey, on my 97 Ranger this spring. I know for a fact that ACE's Rust Stop brush-on paint is damn near invincible...on a driveway at least :annoyed:

Here's a link to the paint..they have a dropdown list of colors too.

I'm pretty sure you can get Rust Stop paint in black also, so black with IH Red would fit what youre looking for. The old boxy Rangers look really badass in blue IMHO...

Ok, so for durability and looks, im gonna want to go with a maaco type paint job right? I am pretty sketchy about the rattle can idea because for one, i have never used a spray can and can see that going very horribly wrong... And because i want my truck to look good and nice, not just like i cheaped out on my shitty old truck and bought some spray paint lol (Its not shitty, but being in highschool and all that how it would be veiwed lmao)

So if i went with maaco or something along those lines... could i get the red decals painted on with the black? As i said, they are starting to peel off over the years, but they are still there and look ok. So i could just have a picture of the truck now for them to go off of right? And what would i be looking at price-wise to get the whole body repainted (including bumpers)?

I have time to plan this out as i still have to get a new tailgate (mines a dented up POS one that u need a crowbar to open cuz the handles f'ed) lol... Im just planning out my prodject. I'll wanna get the dents out first.. :S

If you look around there are quite a few colors available for tractors, they never exactly stayed the same. For example there are a couple colors of John Deere Green, AC Orange...

Oliver had a really neat dark green in the '40's that I am going to paint my truck with. I am going to use a gun on it though, and clear it.

Lol yeeeaa... I dont really think i could paint my truck something like "John Deere Green" lmao...

it sounds like these can be durable and such, but i also forgot to mention that as my truck is my DD, it sits out in the sun. I park it infront of my house on the street because i dont currently have a garage.

It was just for referance, most companies changed their colors over the years so there are mulitple shades of what is commonly called the same name.

I painted my 90 Bronco II at least 3 years ago using the TSC tractor paint. It was Kubota orange and I used the hardener that was on the rack near the paint. I have since sold it, but I still see it on craigslist about once a month. It is a little lighter than it was then, but it still don't look bad if you like the color. I wish I would have repainting the handles black and reattached the emblems before it left.

Here are the pics from the craigslist ad I just found of it.

Looks like they might have been in a slight crash with it too since then by looking at the bumper.

I found a picture of it when I still owned it. This was shortly after paint. My ranger is parked to the left of it.

I know I had less than $100 in this paint job. The paint at the time was ~ $25 and I think the hardener was less than $10. The rest was just sand paper. I would recommend not using the primer they have there. It takes too long to dry so you can sand it. I ended up using some left over primer from when I painted my ranger.

Could a paint job be done like this with more of a shine to it? I like the glossy shine of newer paint jobs and very much do not want just that flat black. Altogether i am wanting my truck to look nicer because it is my DD and not just my offroader lol. Any ideas or opinions?

Why not check out some of the tech schools around? Their paint dept may be looking for "donors" and you may even be able to ask for a certain color or design and be out money for supplies.....

If you have a Harbor Freight closeby, you can buy a HVLP gun for cheap. Buy a couple quarts of real automotive paint and you'll have a legit paint job for about the price of 568 rattle cans.
