over 100K on engine-oil recommendations?

I really don't get people wanting to extend their oil change intervals at all......oil is the cheapest maintenance you can do for your engine.

I would feel awkward only changing my oil once a year. Now that I moved my intervals up to 5k, it feels weird. I always wanna do my oil changes early. I guess I get bored and feel like wrenching....:icon_thumby:

im the same way. changing my oil every 3K is a good reason to crawl under the truck and check things out. look for loose, leaking, broken, worn parts. i like to keep my vehicles in top operating condition (as this returns top fuel economy, power, and reliability) and periodic inspections are the best way to head off potential problems.

i herd somthing like if u use a synthetic oil u should stay with a synthetic oil not switch back of forth.. sound like bull or not???

I change mine when I feel like it, I think I've got over 5K on my current oil, not too worried after going nearly 20K on my 2.9.

Bull indeed. You can switch back and forth as much as you want.

for filters, mobil 1 is the same as k&n besides the nut welded on the end. there was a whole study done on oil filters, they were cut oped, measured for surface area on filter, and the whole nine yards, i will see if i can dig it up. i was always told castrol gtx is one of the better oils? and to stay away from valvoline, my dad has been a mechanic longer than ive been alive, and he says he has rebuilt motors that ran valvoline, and there is a bunch of sludge. change it all regularly and you should be good. air filters and fuel filters too as they are often neglected :)

2000 ranger 4x4...271,000 miles and still running strong.... it doesnt matter what oil you run as long as its changed every 3000 miles........ just dont go to the quickie lubes......

Good ol Wal-Mar Tech Oil and filters... every 2000 miles without fail, nothing fancy. I've used that for the last 20 years and they've never failed me. So far over 1.5M miles on the varied vehicle engines.

Maintainence wise, I only do what's neccesary to keep the vehicle running. I usually don't bother changing oil, unless something major breaks, and i'm under there. I just add as needed, never had a problem yet. Vehicles are fun to work on, but are a waste of money. Since I drive a 95, why give it a thought, the next stop for it, is the scrap yard. Also, wicked's comment, 3k is a good interval to check for worn parts, etc, but most of the time I'm afraid to see what's wrong, as my wallet will suffer. I usually just drive it until it strands me (that's why I have triple A).

synthetic oil wont do anything silly to your motor unless you have ring issues and dont know it. they make high-mileage formulas of synthetic if you want a high mileage oil. i run hi mi mobil 1 in m ranger with almost 213000 miles on it and it runs great with no issues.

You sir, are an idiot.....but good to see your keeping auto mechanics job's safe. If you actually maintained it, your 95' would probably last 1/3 your driving lifetime assuming your not a 100k a yr driver like some. I could write up a big speel on safety and why you should properly maintain your vehicles but it'd be a waste of time with you....

No, I'm not idiotic. I'm more concerned with cost efficiency. Take my ranger for example, I paid 1000$ for it, book value is about 2k for it. I have about 700$ into it. So in essence, if motor or tranny went, I would replace it (with a JY one). So once I hit ~1500 in repair bills, I spend no more on it. I wrench my own vehicles, so no keeping mechanic working. As for oil changes, my first ranger made it from 190k to 278k with only two oil changes, once evey 44,000 miles. I paid 400$ for the truck, it's not worth spending money on it at that point. My 2003 Ranger never got an oil change from me in the 43,000 miles it had before I sold it, and it ran fantastic. My mercury sable was purchased with 96k, rolled over at 152k, never changed the oil, just added. So, just think, if i would have bothered changing the oil in those ~180k miles every 3k. That's roughly 60 oil changes @ ~15$. Doing so would have costed me 900$. While adding oil as needed resulted in no loss of money. (just added used oil from a buddy wanting to get rid of it). All three vehicles ran great, only needed tires/brakes :icon_thumby:

To your repsonse of getting 300k out of the vehicles, that's accomplished by spending more than the vehicles worth. My dad's silverado is an 03, has ~190k miles on it, and we've changed the oil maybe 10 times since new. Still runs like a champ with no engine trouble. While you guys maybe freaks about maintainence, I'm not. I'm only obesessive about work I do on my vehicles, that its done right. When you drive an old beater, there's no point to caring for it like you would a new vehicle, and dumping a ton of money into it, just to keep it on the road to get 300k out of it. I usually don't pay more thank 1k for a vehicle. So, once I hit what I paid for it in repairs, I don't spend anything else on it, not even an oil change. It's just not worth it. Time to look for a replacement at that point.

So, using this logic, how is spending 1k-2k on a "replacement" vehicle cheaper than keeping the vehicle you already own on the road with a little preventative maintenance that might cost you 20-30 bucks every 3/6 months? Whenever you get a different vehicle, you have to consider the additional costs of getting it registered, applying for a title, changing your insurance policy, etc. Not to mention any unforeseen repairs or mechanical issues w/ the newly purchased vehicle. This stuff adds up to quite a bit of money; it would be cheaper to keep the vehicle that you already own and know to be reliable in service for as long as possible. My parents always told me when I was a kid, "The cheapest car you can buy is the one you already drive!" It took me a while to realize it, but they were right. Just my .02
