Last night were were working in th garage and I went outside and heard my wifes dog Montanna making a weird noise and went over and checked on him. He was trying to throw up and was throwing up white foam. I thought he may have ate something he shouldn't have (mole, toad, or any other critter that might walk in to his area...).

I grabbed a flashlight and checked his area real quick and didn't see anything. He seemed like he was having trouble breathing and I looked in his throat to see if I could see anything. All I saw in his throat was foam. Vanessa said he looked bloated and I went inside and looked on line and immediately found out about Gastric Dilation And Volvulus (GDV).

We found a vet hospital that was open and took him there. They gave him an x-ray and diagnosed him with the GDV. The GDV is gas in his stomach that caused him to bloat. If caught quick enough they can stick a tube down his throat and remove the pressure. The GDV will cause the stomach to twist putting pressure on large blood vessels and the diaphram making it hard for him to breathe. Digestion stops and toxins are passed in to the blood. The stomach can even rupture. If the stomach twists they can't put a tube in and have to relieve the pressure wuth a large bore needle and ten do surgery to put the stomach in it's proper position.

The vet said they could do surgery, which was $3,000, but that he probably wouldn't make it through it. She recommended that we put him to sleep. We sat with him for a while before we had it done.

When they came in we sat in front of him. I was petting him on the head when they gave him the shot in his front leg. He never flinched. he looked at me and slowly closed his eyes and was gone.

We brought him home and burried him by the house so he could be close to us. I'm so upset that this happened and without warning. The vets don't know for sure why it happens.

I can't expressed how sad I am over all this.

He was such a good dog. He would wrap his front paws around you and try to hug you. Very loveable.

Good bye my friend. I'm going to miss you!! :bawling::bawling::bawling:

sorry to hear Jim, my condolences.

Jim & Vanessa Sorry for your guys loss its like loosing a Family member when a pet is lost, I know what you mean about the suddenness of it. Iv lost pets when we knew for a while it was coming but it still hurts, but when you have no warning no real chance to get ready it seems so much more worse.

You Guys are in my thoughts and prayers.

damn.....that sucks jim, sorry to hear that. you'll see him again one day though.

I fully appreciate your grief, lost my shit-zu after 15 yrs and it hurts. Prayers with you

Sorry to hear that. I've had to have a few dogs put down over the years. It's not like, it is losing a family member.

Jim, sorry to hear. Been thru it too many times, last fall was the last time but we shared many good times. Picked up another very loving replacement two months ago. What you were describing sounds like the same thing that happened to the kid's pony, a twisted gut.

I'd like to find something that would get white blooms on it every year to plant over him. Seems fitting since he was white.

My condolences Jim and Vanessa...he looks like a very lovable pet...

You might consider these...they are white and fluffy like the dog himself...

Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens)

hydrangea-arbor.jpg
Popular and hardy 'Annabelle' hydrangea
Photo: Missouri Botanical Garden PlantFinder
Hardiness: Zone 2
Bloom time: About 8-6 weeks starting in June
Size at maturity: 4 to 5 feet (about 1.5 m) high and wide Native to the woodlands of the eastern United States, this is the hardiest of the hydrangeas. Thrives in shade or part shade, but also in sun. Likes humus-rich, slightly acid soil and plenty of moisture.
Flowers on new wood, so treat it like a perennial and cut almost to ground level in spring. Flower heads open greenish white and then turn white.
Cultivars: 'Annabelle' (shown above) has showy 7 to 8 inch (20 cm) wide globe-shaped flower heads. Its flowers turn brown rather than rose-pink, so prune off when blooming is finished. 'Grandiflora' (once known as 'Hills of Snow') is an older cultivar with looser, less showy flowers.
'White Lace' is a recent introduction with big, flat but rounded flower clusters surrounded by large sterile florets. Its flowers dry nicely, so you don't have to prune them off for winter.

Dam i am sorry to hear that, my dog is next to me and made me tear up. A dog is a part of the family but more than that because during its whole life you cared for it and nurtured it into your best friend. It is a tough lost, I lost one of my pets 2 weeks ago and i think about it everyday when I pass by were he used to lay, or how every time i would come in my house he would be so excited to greet me. My condolences.

really sorry to hear about your dog,the last one i lost i'd had 16 years.and like robert said, that IS a part of the family.

that issue with the stomach turning i've been hearing of more and more lately.i hope to never have to deal with it myself.

once again,my condolences.

Sorry to hear that Jim. A bulldog would be a replacement once you get to that stage. All they do is eat, sleep and fart. :icon_cheers:

Side note:

My border collie that I adopted while I was stationed in the UK, I had to put down a couple yrs ago. His collar is under the jump seat on the passenger side so he is always riding with me. I miss him a lot.
