unless you are having this done then those prices seem a bit high

i paid 40 for new wires and like 2 bucks a piece for spark plugs
maybe 30 for a new belt.

i got those prices from a dealership so i am assuming that those prices include labor.

thats about what you should be paying, if your not in the least mechanically inclined.

a pcv valve for $60, its a $3 part and take 2 minutes to put in. its in the back of the drivers side valve cover.

if you have the "92" style belt tensioner, its on the top on the passenger side. 2 bolts hold it on.
if you have the "94" style belt tensioner, its on the bottom on the passenger side. 1 bolt holds it on.
you have to pull the belt either way, which should have a routing diagram on the radiator support.

for that price i could fly out to you do the job in a day and fly back and still have about 200 bucks after all is said and done

That's insanity. That whole job could be done in a day by 1 person (though a buddy is always good) for less than $100. That includes parts and lunch.

Ugh. That's like a kick in the throat.

I agree with Kelly88.

How mechanically inclined are you?

All that doesn't require more that a set of wrenches/sockets. Save for the tranny flush, that is, if they are going to power flush it....if they are just changing the fluid/filter, thats easy!

I might pay $100 for the brake fluid flush. If the bleeders haven't been touched in a long time, they are really easy to snap. I am notorious for doing this. And sometimes the rears can snow ball into a disaster if you need to try and remove a rusty brake line from the wheel cylinder. IMO I ****ing hate brake lines. Plus the hassle of bleeding them.

That kind of bill is precisely why a lot of us twist our own wrenches. Gaining the mechanic's skills and experience is not easy sometimes, but the satisfaction of not being dependent on others to keep your ride going more than pays for the journey.

Easy stuff to do, and since it is a dealership only Motorcraft stuff should be going back in (good stuff) but the kicker is paying someone $50-$100/hr to do it.

Even if you have no mechanical experiance, you should be able to change the PVC yourself.

If they are replacing the tensioner, it shouldn't be anything to change the belt while they are there.

Otherwise, it doesn't look too bad. If you can wait on some things (like the ps flush, and the brake fluid changing) to keep the cost down do it. They don't changed that often and unless you suspect a problem a couple of months shouldn't hurt anything.

Smaller dealerships usually have lower shop rates too.

I don't see why you would get your power steering and brake fluid changed anyway. I have never seen either of these on a suggested maintenance schedule. Shops suggest these two in particular because it costs them a very small amount of money to do and make huge profits from it when it's not even necessary.

I will let you make your own decision, but to me it just sounds like another classic American case of **** the next guy because you're gonna get ****ed by someone else.

Spend some time asking around to find a trustworthy small local shop to do your repairs and tuneups. They would be glad to get the work and would feel lucky to get a fraction of the prices you were quoted. Many also give a package discount on the price when you have a whole laundry list of things to do to the truck.

damn.......thats too much. pepboys or az would be cheaper to do it.

the parts alone would be about maybe $200-300 full tuneup(rotor($7) cap($20) wires($30-40) plugs($2x6), oil change(lets say $50 top of the line) belt($15 at the most) and what you listed

those prices are about what pepboys charged me.

At my shop we charge 67$ an hour. Anything that costs us under 20 we double the price on, most things up to around 300 is 60% markup. That does seem a little high though, well more than a little the most the tune-up pays is 3 hrs, a belt tensioner 1 hr, p/s flush, pish a bottle of fluid and a couple minutes with my vacuum bleeder and it's done for about $30, it's not a case of screw the next guy, fluids degrade over time, all fluids. The tranny service is an hour labor plus fluid too by the way. If you think this sounds like a rip off let me ask you this, do you go to work for free? Niether can I. The ins on a shop is outrageous, along with workers comp, light bills, phone bills, etc, and just to let you know my lught bill is between 550-600 over 200 is taxes every moth, along with the same proprtion taxes on a phone bill.

having the bleeders snap off in either a caliper or a rear cylinder for the brakes can be a real problem if you don't plan for it. Especially if you are going to do without a parts shop or a full shop beside you.

I tend to buy spare bleeders and a I bought a brake line flanging kit just for those lines that like to snap off. its a dirt cheap tool and its there when you need it.

And you'll need it someday.
