I would have ran out and removed her from the vehicle for safety sake first and made sure she was OK and not worried about my truck, maybe I'm wierd. My advise to her is...RUN.

i have four daughters and they are teens or twenties, but all have passed this test. and at least two will eventually fail this test after passing it a few times.....
I showed my GF this entire thread. She agreed with the OP and said that if his GF doesn't even know that much to get rid of her and find one that does.
My GF changes her own oil. Mounts, balances, rotates her tires and once changed the LCA on her car so I can't say much about girls not being car retards.
Did I mention she welds and tunes new carbs?
First allow me to retouch on the word cunt. I'm German, we use the word cunt more then you all use the word's Mcdonalds, Truck, and Bush. One mans cunt is another man's fighting words. I use it a lot in a thousand different ways.
So again I'm not talking about my girl being a ASE Mechanic, I'm talking about common sense, Smoke from engine = bad=shut down and get out, no sit there and stare.
So as there are no hard feelings between me and her, the argument is in the past. I cuss and shes physically violent. It's just who we are.
I would naturally go with the heavy duty one... Since they are about $20 why not do the water pump at the same time since you are that far in. Also take the radiator to a shop and have them boil it out and pressure test it. Then you have covered all bases. As for her shutting the car off, I can always restart a car, I can't (quickly) fix a melted engine block. And we where there to buy a jumper box. So...lets connect the dots here.....
Finally, I'm gonna switch the clutch just for the hell of it since I already did the thermo, I went to oreileys and they gave me four options and I can't find a article choosing which one I need. Thermal, non thermal, heavy duty and light duty.
Which do I need?
