If the fan clutch is toast I say weld it. Old tractors have back up bolt holes you can just bolt to run full time or until you never get around to fixing it.

Run some super cool Lucas stuff. It works.

Flush your crappy old radiator with vinegar.

This is slightly off topic, but does anyone make a electric water pump for our engines? It's part of the slightly beefier reman I'm working on.

Check Summitracing, they have port adapters for many engines to convert to electric water pump, so stock water pump is removed.

There is also the option of using the stock belt driven water pump but drive belt with an electric motor instead of the crankshaft, this would work on pretty much any engine.

I think everyone is focused a little to much on this, all she does is yell back "What kind of idiot has a truck with a leak"

Sounds like what I would expect to hear from my lady.

She cleans, and she looks after the kids. I will take care of the vehicles.

Also, think of the environment and your gas bill, turn the truck off when your not driving. Anything over about 10 seconds of idling is just wasting gas.

I came on this thread a bit late but...dude you curse your girlfriend, drop the C word right out of the gate and expect us to focus on your vehicle? Really? An overheating engine is the least of your problems. Apologize to her, learn respect to earn respect and get back to us. BTW I haven't a clue about fixing your vehicle.

Why not after the truck starts to overheat. Shut it off then try the fan to see if it is locking up? Also I know that you can hear the fan pitch change when the truck is hot and the AC is on versus it's cold out. In the summer after the truck has cooled down the fan will give the same pitch as when it's engaged for a few seconds.

Unrelated question why not get an electric fan from a mustang? I know my 01 V8 has 2 electric motors and is meant for a V8. I would think that the V6 mustang would match a V6 Ranger.

I read your entire thread.
A man never ueses the c word EVER period.
You are an ass and deserve every bit of grief you get.

C word is perfectly fine to use... such as when refering to something very close "Oh, its only a cunt-hair away" or my truck just died on the side of the highway "What a cunt!"

Calling your girlfriend one is not acceptable use.

heat/ac, lots of reasons to leave it running....

sometimes my truck runs for days. its overheated like a motherfawker many times too. chance i took.

great....now you guys are are acting like cunts. :thefinger:

seems like a good word to me:dunno: though i really only use it towards males for the most part.

you cant fix stupid, or teach common sense.

anybody over the age of 7 should have at least got out and tried to warn about the dire smokey issue from the vehicle. i have four daughters and they are teens or twenties, but all have passed this test. and at least two will eventually fail this test after passing it a few times.....

man the fawk up? i would have been pissed if someone sat there and watched my car burn down....wonder if she was smart enough to get out if it actually caught fire?:icon_confused:

you all will maintain in that case that a good and proper "dumb cunting" (note a "dumb cunting" will not necessarily contain the words dumb or cunt in its execution) is not in order if your dumb enough to stay in a burning car.....because she was:dunno: she essentially was in a burning car.:shok:

to the op...

unless you need a electric fan, replacing the clutch and leaving the regular cooling pump in place is the most practical solution.

the inner chamber issue mentioned as well causes a creepy overheating issue. not in the scope the average shade tree deals with.

your symptoms are classic failed fan clutch.

My bronco 2 had a blown head gasket but it wasn't overheating, I had milky oil but it was driving just fine. The only reason I knew about the head gasket was when I bought it there was a brand new set of head gaskets in the back seat (dead giveaway). The previous owner tried to cover it up by changing the oil so it didn't show the contaminated oil.

After I got the head gaskets done, I got it back and then the heater core failed. Got that fixed then it overheated. There was air in the system from the heater core replacement as I figured there would be. I drove to a friend's house with the temp at 230 degrees. Let it cool down then fixed the air lock in the system. Its been fine ever since.

Now, I'm pretty sure after reading all these posts that my fan clutch is bad as it free-spins all the time regardless of temperature. Haven't tried the stopping the fan trick yet, but I'm pretty sure I don't need to. At least the fan clutch on this seems pretty simple to get to LOL. My temperature kind of goes up and down like a yo-yo in stop and go traffic telling me that the fan isn't exactly working like its supposed to.

Your overheat issue which I'm guessing combined with the engine idling, your GF had the A/C on which at idle is extremely hard on a vehicle's engine and the cooling system, so combined with possibly a bad fan clutch your engine just completely had enough and overheated itself.

As to why your G/F didn't shut the truck off, maybe she was just confused as to what to do. I've seen a lot of people who have no mechanical knowledge at all, both guys and gals. Teach her how to properly care for a vehicle, teach her what to do when something goes wrong. Obviously she's never been taught. Don't just yell at someone like that it don't teach them anything at all. As a matter of fact yelling at someone just closes them off and they just plain will not listen to you period. Great way to lose a GF.

I learned all of my mechanical stuff that I know from my grandfather, my step-dad was a lazy piece of shit and never even bothered to change the oil in his cars, then wondered why they quit running....hmm gee wonder why. Anyhow, don't automatically assume that someone you are with knows what to do, or understands what's going on. How about in all of your diagnosis you take your GF out there and explain to her and point things out on how stuff works, what to look for, how to fix it, and what to do if something goes wrong like that.

The vehicle can be replaced, sometimes a GF might not be as easy to replace.

I showed my GF this entire thread. She agreed with the OP and said that if his GF doesn't even know that much to get rid of her and find one that does.

My GF changes her own oil. Mounts, balances, rotates her tires and once changed the LCA on her car so I can't say much about girls not being car retards.

Did I mention she welds and tunes new carbs?

....i raised a herd of those so i am glad they are appreciated.

it applies to anyone in my eyes...if my dad was in the car and let that happen...i would have gave him a dumb cunting too...

:dunno:

I`m guessing here but since you had to jump the truck to go to harbor freight she was afraid you would yell at her for shutting the truck off also.

Just thinking about it does your water pump and alternator run off the same belt? Wouldnt that be a hoot if it was just a loose serpentine belt causing both problems.

This thread sure is funny to go through and read about who believes who was right and who was in the wrong on the issue at hand, but really shes a smart girl and would have left him by now if she didnt like how he was treating her, i woulda blown a gasket on anyone who had let my truck run while smoke billowed out the engine cavity. As far as your problem goes, i cant tell where the bulls*** stops and the answers people are putting out begins, i wish you and your girl best of luck.
