I tried Bob Is The Oil Guy, and got no response. My 89 toyota corolla 1.6 DOHC auto trans 222500 miles, main driving is highway 60 mph, light traffic. I have been using Pennzoil High Mileage 10W30. My OCI has been 4K miles, and it uses 1 Qt between, and has been returning great UOA's with TBN still near 6. I am wanting to switch to a synthetic 10W40 to decrease oil consumption and maybe improve wear on the car, and maybe a hint of gas savings on the daily beater. I have found that Mobil 1 makes a 10W40 syn, but not much else, opinion and suggestions appreciated.

Don't bother.

"Synthetic" oil is only more highly refined conventional. The only difference is that the particles are much closer in size from the largest to the smallest. The old 89 engine was built well before synthetics were around. It might help a bit, but in my experience putting synthetic into an engine that old, with that many miles, that is already leaking, is bad news.

Just get some stable oil.

It does not leak oil. I am a professional auto/ diesel tech. My pet peeve is fluid leaks. The valve stem seals leak slightly, and I have a 5% or less blow by on the rings on a leak down test. The engine is still in very excellent shape, and I expect it to go to at least 325K. Synthetic Oils also have no trace elements of I think it's sulfur and something else, I just want to give it all the protection I can, but I have never been very brand loyal, and cannot find a good deal of info on slightly thicker synthetics..

ok, in that case, do it. Might help, prolly can't hurt.

I have even thought of using rotella 15W40 in the thing, I get it cheaper than regular oil, and run it in some propane engine that come in with great results.

Not one single statement in that paragraph is true.

Thats why the oil debate keeps popping up. People talking about things they have no clue.

Rotella T also has more zinc in it than most gas engine oil. Helps with wear in the engine. And that refined oil is semi-synthetic. True synthetic is man-made. Hence the name.

i dont know if its true about synthetic or not and dont give a shit one way or another. I use pennsoil 5w-30 most of the time but also will use 10w-30. I do not trust synthetic or the "high mileage" crap which seems like a 10 dollar extra ripoff

Rottella T is the cats ass i think pretty well all heavy duty diesel mechanics will agree i used to run it in my old 93 escort 1.9L SOHC ONLY IN SUMMER as that stuff turns into molasses in -40C (i live in canada lol) but its great that shit don't burn and my buddy ran it in his old Tempo GL 3.0 V-6 that motor used to burn a lot of oil until he started running that stuff but it can also make your oil pressure go a little too high and possibly blow out gaskets

What? Has someone been dropping the toilet lid on your head while you take a drink? :icon_twisted:

Synthetic oil is exactly that. Synthetic. Not conventional - certainly not 'more highly refined' conventional.

It's man-made. WAY better than dino-oil. It's more uniform on a molecular level, and it's MUCH more stable. It does not cause your engine to suddenly start leaking, it just cleans the sludge out that's stopping up your previously-existing leaks. I have switched engines over to full synth-oil at 280k-plus and had zero ill effect. It actually improved the gas mileage by 2mpg on my '87 Jetta when I switched it (that was the 280k-plus car) and as an added bonus it stopped the number 3 cylinder intake cam follower from clicking. Synth-oil has been around a LONG time, and it is continously being proven to be 'all that and a bag of chips.'

Porsche and Mercedes-Benz wouldn't recommend it and use it as factory-fill if it weren't.

Mental - I run M1 15w40 (I think, I've been experimenting the last couple years) in the summer in my 2.8 litre VW. It does a great job of keeping things slick and protected. Oil temps rearely in the 225-230 range, only happens when I've been putting it through some high revs for long periods on really hot days. Generally see oil temps in the 216-222 range, and that's on a very free-revving small displacement mill. Highway cruising temps are solid at 216-218 all day long.

It is hard to find any 15W40 around here except things like Delo or Rotella. I was looking at Mobil 1 10W40 or even Rotella 15W40. I could probably run rotella year round here in North Fl, we just had a record smashing 2 weeks straight of below 32 degree weather.... I am simply wanting a couple of reccomendations on what might work in the synthetics, even though the pennzoil high mileage has been giving me good UOA's, and TBN is still always high I am not interested in extended drains, just great protection, my car is getting old, and I want to help it along.

read that.

true synthetic has no traces on sulphur and phosphorus. Castrol Syntech is the only "synthetic" that is more highly refined base stock ....... it cannot be labeled as synthetic over seas.

Synthetic blend is just that. it is a blend of true synthetic and highly refined base stock.

I don't think I would run 15-40 in a gas engine ......

switch to mobile1 or Royal Purple 10-30 or 10-40 and you will be fine.

Has anyone ever used Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W40? Or Maybe Pennzoil Platinum? But they only make the platinum in 30 wt I wanted to try and slow down my oil consumption between oil changes, which is about a 1/2 qt to 1 qt every 4k...

short of sealing up the valves you're not going to do that...... Mobil1 will slow down the rate of increase on your oil consumption.
