hi i was wondering if anyone out there had some experience replacing oil pumps and had some tricks or tips to share. i have the haynes manual and it describes it as a pritty big job. also it says you have to lift the engine off of the engine mounts is there any way to get around this. lastly does anyone know of where i can get a oem quality or better pump fairly cheap.

thanks

Jut re-read your other post.

There's almost no chance that the oil pump is bad....

why else would i not have any oil pressure

why else would i not have any oil pressure

The filter pressure release is stuck open.. or worn bearings..or in some engines a particular bearing can spin and close off oil that should be passing thru that bearing..
Big Jim :bad:

what would you recomend i do, and i thought i remembered someone saying you have to drop the oil pan anyway to check thecrank or rod bearings. dangerranger i know that the low oil pressure is fairlycomon but mine was 8 psi cold with straight 30 wt and as big jim m said we have a problem.

also how do you find which bearing is spun or worn

remove the engine from the truck and tear it down, inspect along the way.

Mike If the lifters are clattering it should be a sign of low oil pressure.. Which MAY be a spun cam bearing, the center one I think, But if the oil pressure shows low at the sender, that pressure should be right out of the pump/filter area.
SO showing 8 lbs would be a low pressure caused by either the filter or the pump itself. OR really worn main and rod bearings. I'd first change to a new different brand filter..Prime it before installing.. and if the pressure don't come up..Then I'd pull the pan and plastigage a few bnearings to see if my loss was from extreme engine wear.. If the bearings are causing the problem change them! next would be a new pump.. Being the genius that I am I would prolly fool around with the pressure release spring in the existing pump to see if it was hung open.. But I don't advise reusing it to ANYONE.
BUT I wouldn't start or run that engine much till it was resolved.

thanks jim. i dont think its the oil filter because its brand new and maybe has 10-15 miles of run time on it and this is the 3rd on ive put in it all different brands. what do you mean "plastigage" im guesing checking for wear but is that with a fealer type guage or something? once again thanks

PLASTIGAGE is a thin piece of substance like plastic (one time it was WAX) that is put between the rod/main bearing and the rod/main itself. Then the bolts are tightned to near specification. Then the caps are taken off and the plastigage has been flattened by the pressure.. Measuring the flattened area tells the mechanic (YOU) how much wear is on each bearing.
With as much loss as you have I'm sure simply looking at the bearings would tell most mechanics wheather they were worn out.. or not.
Truthfully I have never seen 8lbs of pressure related to worn bearings. I do NOT know what your answer is but I'd suspect the pressure release in the pump if it were mine..

thanks big jim and everyone else i went to the auto parts store and picked up a oil pump after that i started to take stuff off to prepair to lift the engine. i have to work tomorow and probably monday so hopefully i can do it on tues. also they stopped making the screen for the pump so i have to see if i can reuse mine.

Sometimes the damn screen is the problem.. Look it over and make sure it and the pan are real clean before installing the pump..
Also while it is apart before installing the pump plastigage at least one or two main and one or two rod bearings.. If they are out of spec then plastigage them all as there is little use putting it back together if the bearings are the problem..
Good luck.

actualy i wound up working like a 70 somethin hour week so i didnt get time to touch it untill today. THAT WAS THE BIGGEST PITA JOB I HAVE EVERDONE:pissedoff: first we couldt reach the bolt that holds the distributer on so we had to leave it on:annoyed:. then the passenger side motor mount bolt is at such a terrible angle we started taking every thing off around it to get at it . next we started to lift the motor up and the passenger side came up fine but the drivers side was stuck or something and once we lifted it enough to fit 1 by 1 boards under it we let the weight back down off the jacks only to find we didnt have enough clearence for the pan to fit through so up in the air it went again this time with cut 2 by 4s let it back down and its still not enough so once more we jacked it up and stuck the 1 by 1s on top of the 2 by 4s and now we could clear the trans but not the exhaust y pipe:pissedoff:, thats where we called it a day. also it seams like the front of the engine is lifting farther than the back and after jacking it up farther the tires were starting to get light. we even throught a jack under the trans but that was lifting the whole truck up and making the clearance issue worse. am i doing something wrong.DOES ANY ONE HAVE ANY TIPS ON HOW TO DO IT BETTER my dad and i followed the instructions to the t out of the haynes manual. also what is the y pipe made of the sawzaw wouldnt touch it
