A few weeks ago I posted the picture of my Ranger turning over 150K miles. Today, I changed the oil in it, and thought it was
interesting to see the color of the oil (at 3877 miles), and how much it has consumed. In the pictures, the screwdriver shows
where the oil level was the last time it was changed, using 4.5 QUARTS. There has been no oil added since it was
changed. I bought the truck with 36K miles on it, and since owning it, I've always maintained it myself, using the following:

1) Motorcraft or Purolator PAPER air filters (changed once a year)
2) ONLY Motorcraft oil filters, changed every oil change
2) Castrol GTX 5W30 (dino), changed between 3K and 4K miles

try changing the PCV valve, I had a Cavalier that used 2 quarts per tank, turn out there was a rubber o-ring that went around the valve that had fallen off, didn't use a drop after that (though it had other issues from carbon buildup by that point) it's also helped our other vehicles as well with oil consumption.

I guess I didn't make myself clear, the oil level hasn't dropped hardly at all in 3877 miles.......

i think the more amazing part is how clean the oil still looks. mine looks worse than that as soon as i put it in the crank case.

I changed my oil a couple of days ago as well. I get the feeling that I may have missed an oil change, cause that is the dirtiest my oil has ever been. But when I changed it the oil was at the same level as it was when I put it in. All 5 quarts of it still in the crank case. And I have 192,xxx miles on mine.

Thanks! Which version do you have? Mine is the new VR version.

Here are a couple interesting shots I've used it for:

thats pretty crazy... id hate to hear how much you have invested :icon_surprised:

Looks like mine...I am amazed with this engine....193K and NO noticable oil consumption. The color on mine also looks about the same.

see, thats a weird thing about older 3.0's...they all hold different amounts of oil (or else they all have different lengths of dipsticks). 4.5 quarts with an oil and filter change brings mine right to the MAX mark...and ive seen plenty of both motors that take 5 quarts and ones that take 4.5 quarts :dntknw:

the oil does look good, however. and consumption is more than reasonable. i run engine flush through mine every several oil changes and my oil always comes about like yours at 3k. my consumption is a little higher than yours, however. about a quart between changes. pretty sure its getting past the rings...as the consumption will very depending on how much the engine has "worked" over the past 3,000 miles.

Oil Changes

What about just changing the oil filter every month instead of an entire oil change every 3,000 miles?
