Filters are cheap. I see no reason to not change them every oil change.

I use valvoline synthetic and wash out the crankcase each oil change by dumping a little ATF in it the day before. At 5k, my oil looks like new. At 7.5k my oil is still a lot brighter than the OPs. In that time I use maybe 1/2 quart.

Thats what my oil looks like when I change it. Changing your oil every 5000kms (3000 miles) is probably one of the best preventative maintenance things you can do for your car. I hate it when I do oil changes on vehicles with 25000kms and still has the factory oil filter on it
