OHV to SOHC

Not trying to hijack a thread, I have a 94 Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0l ohv w/ 302,000. I getting a little nervous and would like to install a 4.0 sohc. Since my ranger is a little older than his 97' and runs obd I, what would i need differntly to do the conversion??

Thanks,
Jim

Anybody??

damn 302,000 miles!!

Lol yup. It's been a good truck. :icon_cheers:

Anybody??

Won't be as easy as the OP. AC box in the engine compartment will have to go, custom engine harness will have to be made, you'll have to find a tuner that can actually reprogram the ODB-1 to work - several other misc. things to do or have done - in other words, a real PITA.

I don't know that much about obd systems, Could i just switch out computers?

what kind of issues, anything i should be worried about??
My '02 has the timing chain problem, like many others out there.
Do a google search:
"Ford Ranger 4.0L SOHC timing chain problems"

how much work do you guys think it would be to put a sohc 4.0L in my 03 Edge i got the 3L 5spd i know i need a different tranny but would it be any kind of direct swap?

BUMP. :)

I have an '06 ranger 3.0l and a '05(smogs gonna be an issue, but not worried about it) sohc fly by wire explorer engine sitting in my garage. Obviosly I'll need a TB, computer, trans, radiator..........what else? And what should I get the parts from? A 4.0 ranger or explorer?

Um, basically my question is since Im putting an explorer engine into a ranger, where should I get the wiring harness/ecu out of? A 4.0 ragner or explorer? Anyone? thanks.

I have also heard intially the chain tensioners were a bad design, I think it took until about 2001 to fix it, i have a friend with a 2000 ranger and i can hear the timing chain when it idles. Not a good thing, it only has 125,000 Miles.
The Ranger did not come with the 4.0 SOHC engine until 2001. Your friends 2000 with the timing chain noise has nothing to do with the 4.0 SOHC timing chain problem.

Most of the 4.0 SOHC timing chain issues in the Ranger was in 2001. There were still a few 2002 Rangers with the timing chain problem but it was pretty much resolved by 2003. My 2002 4.0 SOHC engine is still a quite as can be at 106,000 miles.

The explorer.

Really? I was thinking the ranger. But this is why I asked! :)

Can you explain why? I thought the ranger ecu/wiring harness would be easier to install since its going into a ranger.....Is the explorer sohc any different then the ranger?(besides the TB which Im ditching) Thanks!
