News to me about this. Did some reading sounds excellent, it would be really helpful. From what I read my truck missed the year of obdII by a couple years. Is there something similar to this gadget for my vehicle?

no, there is no OBD 1 reader for your phone....unless you take a wire from your phone and use it as a jumper on the diagnostic output and watch the check engine light flash, thats sort of like using your phone to diagnose it.
