Nope

Back when i had my 03 FX4 with 31s. That had factory 4.10 gears, that was more than enough for me. I would go tune

Gears

Gear it...

No cai ever.

Gears.

I vote gears. 4.88 maybe a bit low though unless this is a dedicated off road rig that won't see the highway. 4.56 may be a better match.

Check out the gears vs tire size chart in the tech articles section and see where that gear/tire combo sits.

How much highway driving do you do and what kind of terrain do you have? If your area is relatively flat 2400 at 60 mph indicates your gearing is probably too high, if it's hilly or mountainous more gear would help. When I say a gear is too high I mean it's too low numerically- 3.73 is higher than 4.10 for example. If you drive in the winter at all, forget the cold air intake.

I feel like gears made the best bang change, also

Jody- great question!

I must be delirious because so far (6 weeks ago) I dove into a set of 33s and so far I'm liking the difference. No more can opener feeling, but have been a tiny bit more on the brakes lately. So.......I'd go with a tune. I believe the factory cost of re-gearing the Torsen LS costs around $800+ shipping. I'd go to 4:56, instead of the 4:88. Now since it's my DD, on the trail, that's always a totally different thing. I may in time since the input bushing/seals/yoke do need some attention with my rear end. For anyone else, I'd say re-gear. A new ECM tune won't last after the first power cycle right? Only if it's purchased with the associated hardware.

for me however...
First choice: Tune (how much $$ ??)
2nd choice: Re-gear $$

regear, 4.56 though, I think 4.88’s would be too deep.

I would love to have a SCT Ranger. Especially with a TIB front end. When I move to southern Colorado (or Farmington, NM) that will give me a second place to sleep.

Ford gave it a CAI from the factory. So I wouldn't waste money on that. Gears would be my top choice. But 4.56 would probably be my favorite option there unless it's a 90% trail rig. If it's a dedicated trail rig and you plan on going up to 35" tires, go ahead with 4.88 or 5.13 gears.

We all seem to have misread the original post about it already being done.

In any case, 2,400 at 60 in 5th is probably fine to the most part if you don't travel often on highways with 70 and higher speed limits (I generally don't). So, I agree with the sentiment in that regard. For those that do, it might be a bad choice.

In my case, since I don't plan on going any bigger than 32's and I don't travel on 70+ mph highways often, I plan to regear my 2011 to 4.56. With the factory 3.73's and 31 inch tires, it's a bit tall and the truck can struggle with hills, especially if I have something on the roof or I'm towing (in 4th gear). 4.10 would put me back where I was with the 235/75R15's but 4.56 will get me where I want to be with the low end grunt for off road and towing. I'll just have to eat the penalty a bit when I do travel on 70+ mph highways. Once 32's are put on, it might negate some of that penalty but still keep me in the tow/haul/off road range I want to be in.
