Hey guys,

I posted this in the general discussion forum before realizing it may belong here! If the duplicate thread is a problem, mods please delete one and I do apologize for the inconvenience.

I'm a new member here. I currently own a '96 Grand Cherokee that's lifted and has quite a bit done to it. Although it's a great truck (when it works like it should), it's become a money pit and too much needs to be done to it at this point, so I want something else...

So, I've chosen a Ranger. I've always heard so much about the reliability of Rangers which is what has steered me this way. I am sick of spending every moment of daylight underneath my Jeep swapping/fixing/replacing stuff, and I want a fun little truck that will not be so expensive to drive.

I've done a lot of searching and THINK what I want is a base, 2wd 2.3 Ranger. My reason for this choice would probably be due to their simplicity, and the reputation these trucks have. Gas mileage is also a big factor, considering that the Jeep never did much better than 16mpg.

My question to you guys is, what years should I be looking at for reliability? I am on the fence as to whether I should go shop right now for a 2-3000$ Ranger and hope that it lasts, or save a bit of coin and in a few months try and buy an 07-08 with the 2.3. They are running at about $7k around here with low mileage. Are there certain years to look out for? Am I better off with an older Ranger (2000-2003ish?) that I can tinker with and not worry so much about? Or will they give me lots of trouble?

The plan is to stuff my 31s from my Jeep onto the Ranger, and a small lift. At this point I just want a reliable truck that will take me fishing whenever I want to go. I don't mind wrenching once in a while, but I would also prefer not to have to every single weekend (unless of course it's for a mod and not a repair).

Looking forward to any responses! Thanks again guys.

Welcome to TRS.....find ANY Ranger that runs well and still leaves you a couple hundred dollars left over for the usual maintenance---fluid/filter changes (air filter...A/T filter?...differential fluid...trans fluid...engine coolant---flush if necessary...etc)/new spark plugs/new batterycables/etc....that way you KNOW that everything is fresh.
