Hey everyone. the Names michael. you can call me mike, michael, mikey, or even dbag haha.

ok on to business. i just purchased an 86 ford ranger supercab 4wd. the front u joints are gone, seals are shot. ball joints are terrible.

i bought the stuff to fix the d28. got into it and decided its not worth it to me.

so heres the question. im about to buy a dana 35 for the front, im buying the entire front drive gear from the guy as well as his rear end too. an 8.8 from an explorer. heres what they have...

Dana 35 TTB brand new aussie locker 4:56 gears d44 knuckles/lockouts/brakes ( 5 on 5.5 pattern now) with 2" spacers all new joints, wheel bearings and seals. Steering included ( also fairly new) pads and calipers new

rear 8.8 disc brakes 4:56 gears detroit lunchbox locker. SOLID diff cover everything ( bears, seals, brakes) new 3 years ago. adpaters to convert to 5 on 5.5 pattern to match front.

here are the questions. what all else will i have to do other than shorten the front drive shaft an inch or so?

he says other than that itll bolt in perfectly. its out of his bii.

thanks a million in advance guys!

Hi D-Bag! Welcome to the forum.:icon_thumby:

Other than all that, I'd have to say now is the best time for you to put in a lift kit. Skyjacker Stage2 6" kit:icon_thumby:
Another $1200 and just a wee bit more labor now, or you can spend the money later and cuss yourself when you tear the axles back out.

That was my 2 cents, Good luck D-Bag!

does it have to be a $1200 kit?? :'( lmao. ill do a lift later. it has a 4cyl right now so its getting a v6 or a 302 next summer. i just need it on the road asap so i can drive it this winter. the lift, motor, trans, transfer case, and so on will be next summer!

I promise to do a build thread 8)

so now I have a question. Would a 2000 ranger frot end fit under my 86??

Nope, last year for TTB is 94 for explorer, 97 for ranger...95-97 rangers have the twin piston calipers up front for better braking, 89-94 rangers, B2's, and explorers share the same front's,but some had dana 35 hybrid axle, mainly 93-94 with the 3.0L...95-00 explorers have factory 31 spline rear disc, 91-94 explorers were drum, but 31 spline axles, all others are 28 spline and will not interchange with 31 spline axle housings

why wont the front from the b2 work for his ranger? Its 86 and should be same dimensions as the b2, plus being its a d35 swapped into a d28 vehicle the stub shaft should already be the correct length right? Other than the driveshaft it should bolt right in shouldnt it?

By the way ditch the ranger springs, get some from an old XJ. theres a swappable parts chart int he tech library, the ranger springs are way too stiff for any kinda flex.

That would fit, but its a dana 28, and if he is having to fix/replace parts now, he might as well upgrade now! :icon_thumby:

The axle that won't work is the one from the 2000. The one I'm getting is the Dana 35. The guy got ahold of me finally. And yes if I'm gonna put money into the weak Dana 28 I might as well save myself
Money down the line and get the 35. Not to mention it has all the parts I woulda bought already in it anyway

thats what I thought, that you bought the d35 with 44 knuckles that was already mounted in a b2. In this situation it should have ben a straight swap or am I still confused?

No your right. Its a straight swap. Just have to get the front driveshaft shortened about and inch or so
