Hi!

I'm Ali, and I am an addict.

I've wanted for a long time to get into the real business of modifying vehicles, and since I have started in on my car, I have felt the itch to start attacking my husband's '04 Ranger.

The Deceptiford is not stock, it's got a 2" body lift and aftermarket wheels. I'm pretty sure everything else is just boring from the factory. I want to make the most of this truck as it's just a beautiful machine, and she really is my hubby's baby, he just doesn't have the time to invest in the research and wrench time like I do. That and, well, he's just not as interested in the DIY part as he is the RESULTS. I'm a noob with tools and being under the hood, so any and all time I can get is time I want.

I'm not new to the car forum scene, and that's why I am seeking out a good place to call home for the Ranger. I am looking for inside information on what aftermarket parts work and don't, what little things we need to be looking out for, and also, WTH is that NOISE.. or whatever ;)

I know more about cars than I do trucks, but I want to learn everything I can. I'll ask a lot of stupid questions, but the only way to learn is to ask.

Here's a pic, I'm going out to read...

your hubby is a blessed man...

Thanks! I'm hoping for some insomniacs... I'm a night nurse and its the best reading and thinking time when everyone's asleep!

I didn't mention that the truck was a birthday present two years ago. Yeah, I'm a damn good wife. Lol.

For starters I'm looking for info on a nice growly (but not obnoxious) exhaust and what sort of intakes everyone swears by.

i prefer dynomax welded mufflers.

but would not spend any money for exaust or intake for that engine.

when it starts rattling i would replace that powertrain with a nice alum 5.3 setup.

hopefully that takes 200k miles.

Tell me about this rattle.

Hmm.. I'll have to look more into this. What can be done for an ounce of prevention?

It does make a strange noise, but not like that. It doesn't come from the engine and is more of a metallic *tink.

The 4.0 SOHC has a kinda stupid timing chain setup. Instead of an oil-system fed hydraulic chain tensioner system is has a pair of spring-loaded slugs that are used to hold the chains in tension.

It works great for a while, but as the springs wear the chains are allowed to slacken up some and will start to rattle. If left go long enough it will damage the nylon chain guides as the chains slap against them and then chew the surface up. If that happens the only choice is to replace the entire cassette, and doing the rear one requires the engine be removed.

Replacing the tensioners when you start to get just a little rattle on acceleration and regular oil changes is generally enough to prevent and serious damage. The tensioners are generally pretty easy to do, it's just a matter of unscrewing them and then putting the new ones in. Worst part is that the upper intake manifold has to be removed to get enough space to get them out.

Welcome to TRS~!

I think you've come to the right place for information...and you will probably get more than you need...I won't offer any good advice on your plans, dreams, or problems with your truck because I've never even seen one of those up close...but I will say your Photobucket account is open and if you have anything that you don't want prying eyes to find...close it while you are posting or reading on here...and make your personal stuff "PRIVATE"...it can be done in your PB controls...

Enjoy!

welcome. Glad to have ya.
once you're here, it's ALL downhill from now. It's fun tho!

Typical of you Mark to go snooping around....Katie has been telling me all about your.....snooping. :icon_cheers:

Here's the thing though, pal, is that even in the rare event that you did offer advice, it would be awful and intended only for someone who isn't smart enough to realize that you are some crazy canuck who can't even get his own ranger to run on all 4 cylinders. And so, I would have to correct your advice, usually saying something like 'No, it's definitely the rotary durter exit seal that is leaking, and you should replace it pronto!'

Also, I think you should check out the movie Wipe-Out, as it's clear you have a thing for roller derby chicks...watch out though, ellen page stars in that movie, you might not make it 30 min into the movie before fainting!

Yup, getting involved in TRS is like blowing out both engines at angels-30. It's a long ride down to the bottom, and you might as well enjoy the ride down and hope for a soft landing when you get there.

Well I'm already on that slippery slope with my car, but it's brand new.. Gotta think about the warranty a LITTLE. so when I hit the wall there I need to be growing my wrenching muscles in the meantime.

Thanks for the welcome!!

Also, glad to see someone familiar with derby!

What do you have for yourself?

Gosh, I'm flattered! I would have tried to defend myself but I have to say you are wrong about my truck. It runs on all four cylinders just fine except on days ending in "EH" and that includes SundEH! You'd probably have to get yourself a Canadian calendar to see what I mean...

I was exposed to roller derby years ago with one of the first movies about it...just can't remember the name of the movie...or whether I ate popcorn that day or chips...probably both since I was a spoiled brat that got everything I ever wanted except :icon_confused:...oh, yeah, except that GI Joe doll with the articulating wrists and knees...all we ever got in Canada was Barbie dolls but she sure looked great in a camo outfit...

I wasn't really sneaking around your pics...honest...I only saw a bunch of red and blue cars but that was because my mouse got stuck on that little > in your PB account and it clicked itself a few times before I realized what was happening...

Then I realized I was actually doing you a favour by making sure you didn't have any nudie pics of yourself in there that others might see...and I would have warned you about them some time...maybe even the same day...:)

Interestingly enough, I do have a canadian calendar. Katie brought one back last time we tag-teamed her....I'm sure you remember....the wooden leg. :icon_surprised:

I had one of those camo barbies, and while the brunette did look good in green and brown, I though the blonde had her beat by at least half a mile....or...kilometer...whichever you prefer.

Can you try and remember the name of the movie? I have a thing for girls with wheels attached to their shoes...something about California dreamin' and the 60's...
