hey y'all;
Bought a 1988 Ranger 4x4 Manual that a kid hit a tree with so I'm going to try and rebuild and get back on the road.

Already went out and acquired a 1984 front end so while I have the front cut off thought I would rebuild engine, which I've never done. Once I got the engine out I decided to convert to 4.0L...wahooooo, now I'm really in the learning mode.

anyway, I bought a 4.0L off craigslist which the guy wasn't sure what year it was but it came out of and explorer.

Anyone know how I can identify year and where those markings are located?

This should be fun and we are going mudding when we are done!!!

Shouldn't there be casting numbers on the block/heads? Post up lots of pictures and I'm sure we can help.

Here are the only 2 identification items on the block. The valve covers have a sticker on them that says 99 but I'm not really trusting that.

Did a little more poking around and found this behind the Crank pulley.
90TM-6059-A1D

The block casting is '90+ the intake is 96+.
I wouldn't be surprised if the valve covers are right though.

I'd say you have the newer (95ish) OHV.

I'm not sure it matters as long as the heads match the block. You do probably have a few of the newer sensor designs on-board..

yea, that is the I'm thinking. I figured out the last pic I sent was timing cover and that could be the same since the 90 and the Intake I'm not sure it could make this a 96 but not sure someone didn't stick a 96 intake on this block. So that is why I was trying hard to find the block code some where.

According to everything I'm finding on the WEB is that the code should be located near the starter which is the 15C99 but it doesn't make sense according to everything I'm finding.

Can't believe how tuff this is.

For all those that were playing long at home! we have found the block casting number!! 97TM-6015-AA. Right by the oil filter. We found it when we removed the engine mounts.
