So, I have a 2.0 w/ the factory 2bbl motorcraft carb. What I want to do is install a performance 2bbl form holly or Weber. Any one have any ideas on where to get kits for eather of those? Also how much of a power increase I'm looking at and which Carb would you suggest? I also want to do a 2.3 head swap with a larger cam, better valves and some p&p done. But will the bottom end of the factory 2.0 hold up to the extra power? Also which years would be best to get the head off of? ( I have a 2.3 header installed)

Any help would be appreciated. I don't really want to do an engine swap, just don't have the time or the extra car to drive.

the heads are the same, or close enough that it won't make a difference if it's not ported... If you want to grab a second head to modify , you'll want to have a carbureted one so the intake manifold matches, the fuel injected manifolds have a different pattern. One of the better cams to put in is just the normal ranger roller cam found on the '89-94 ranger 2.3's (maybe starting in '87 or '88, don't remember off the top of my head)

The bottom end (crank and rods) will handle about 300hp, the 2.0 is a debored 2.3

Shorty

I'd use a shorty header off a 95 2.3 less weight and freeier flowing.Free up the exhaust system also no cat and glass pak muffler.IMO

I had a single barrel solex on my 88 2.0 for a while that I bought new years ago for about $130. It was for a WWII jeep with a 4 cylinder. I ran it on a 2.4L 89 nissan truck for a while, then on my Ranger. Ran pretty good once I drilled the jets a little. Luckily, it ran lean under all conditions and I was able to make right by drilling the jets, as I was not able to buy parts for it. I bought it because it was the cheapest thing I could get my hands on at the time. It got some debris in it when my fuel pump died, though, and I was tired of screwing with it, so I bought a new 350 holley. Had to make a spacer and machine the intake manifold on a CNC mill though, to make it fit right. The Holley runs great, fuel mixture was almost spot on under all conditions right out of the box. I am running a Lunati cam right now, part # 32900. I ported my head and have a Headman long tube header as well. Motor runs great, revs happily to 7k. There are other carbs though, that would fit our intake manifold with less work than is required to make the holley fit right, and that would be easier to find parts for than the solex. The solex was an easy install though, as I was able to make a spacer without any CNC equipment, and no work needed to be done to the intake manifold. I'm sure someone else will chime in with some other options. Chilsam, I had a glass pack and found the sound to be a little annoying. Right now I have a flowmaster 44 I pulled off a Mustang and I love the sound of it.

Thank you guys. That's alot of what I have been looking for. I acctualy had the cat removed till I had to emitions it one last time. I've heard that you have to replace the glass packs every 30,000 miles or so?! How much of a power increase would you think I'm at with the cam, p&p head, and performance 2bbl Carb. I think I'm sitting right around 90hp now

It won't make big power, but my butt dyno tells me mine runs a lot better than it did stock. Stock my truck wouldn't spin a 26 inch tire on a wet road. It's actually pretty fun to drive with 5.13s in it now. Fact is though, you can buy new honda accord with 265 hp, and your not going to outrun that with a naturally aspirated 2.0. Nitrous is fun if you want some more go. I'm putting a 5.0 in mine soon. I never would have done all the head work to my motor, but it was screwed up when I bought it. Previous owner had a hydraulic lifter go bad and replaced one lifter and rocker, then sold it to me before it got loud. I drove it about 100 miles after I bought it, and pulled a valve cover to find wiped cam lobes and an intake valve all peened over on the top. I pulled the head to find all my exhaust valve seats were bad. I had to get new valves, springs, seats, cam, rockers, and lifters, or swap the motor or head.

I'm not trying to make mad power, just enough to make it acctualy feel like I'm accelerating from a light and don't have to floor it to make it up a small hill. I'm planing on putting 5.0 cobra engine in it, but not till I can find another daily driver to run around in.

If I was you, I would run a stock valvetrain and port the head. Get a 3 angle valvejob done. As far as a carburetor, you will just have to look around. I don't know if Weber or someone has a kit. If there is no kit you will just have to be creative and make something. I took some pictures when I had my carburetor off, but I haven't been able to find them. Your truck will feel great with a fresh valvejob and a good tune up, but I wouldn't go much beyond that. The price of valvetrain parts really adds up. I would save my money for the 5.0 swap if I was you. I will try to find the pictures or take some new ones, in case you decide to go the same route as me.

Esslinger has some adaptors for holley carburetors. link-http://www.esslingeracing.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=SPCADP
The second one from the top is almost identical to what I made for my truck. I used a CNC mill to match the plenum on my intake manifold to the spacer, which was made to match my carburetor. However, with some patience you could do it all by hand. Edit- Better yet, check this link out. http://www.esslingeracing.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=E2724-5K&Category_Code=MAN That is an intake manifold that will bolt to a 2.3 head, and a holley will bolt to it. $190 ain't too bad either. That Esslinger piece probably flows better than the stocker too.

That is a better muffler but I was thinking of cost,I have dual glasspaks on my 79 460 snofiter and on the 300 FI Brainger I kinna like the sound, but to each his own.I LUV this site!:yahoo:

It's hard to make a 460 sound bad. I guess the glass pack didn't sound that bad, but I am almost sure it was louder than an open header on my Ranger. I set off every car alarm on the block with that thing. As a matter of fact, when I put my new carburetor on and was tuning the truck, I used a walker muffler for an 07 V6 dodge magnum, or something like that. The 2.5 inch id fit my setup and kept things a little quieter for idling and zipping the motor in front of the house.

That's hilarious

Wish I'd of been there!:icon_rofl:

I've seen that one before but I just realized that there is no outlet for the coolant into the head...can that be safely eiminated? I've always hated routing that hose around the back of the head...it always manages to get in the way of something, but I tolerated it because I thought it helped cool the intake resulting in slightly better performance...

Now I'm curious...
