Need an expert on rear ends (so to speak).

Due to ford's genius idea of putting the axle tag on the cover plate, where anyone who might service it will loose it (as such the previous owner).

Due to the owner's working on it before.

Due to the cover being stamped 1997, when my truck is a 1994.

I have no clue what actual rear end I have! (Other than it's a 7.5 RG).

It could be out of a 97 mustang for all I know.

According to ford, the photo of the actual part of the actual cross pin is:

As you can see, on the bolt end, it's flat!

As also shown here:

But...on my truck, it's round!

As seen in my truck.

So it looks like the round one's are in the 8.8, and the flat one's in the 7.5.

Which can only mean..

Someone put a 8.8 carrier in a 7.5 housing (I don't even know if that's possible).

Or someone put the wrong one it it.

Either way, I need a new cross pin (pinion shaft, and both my local parts store, ebay and Ford themselves show a totally different photo.

Different sizes notches in the shaft, different length of notches, etc.

So now I'm left wondering, will any shaft work? If so I can get a NOS one from a 70's mustang for like $10, vs the "normal" price of $35+.

Pins can have different shapes, mostly dependant on gear ratio of the ring & pinion. If the pin is the same diameter and length, it'll work and is ok to use it...

The deeper rations (3.73 and 4.10) got the notched pin, its requires in order to get the c clips in/out. The full round pin wont clear the ring on those gear ratios.

Well since it's possible someone swapped the rear end, how would I be able to determine the GR? Is there something I can measure?

Its stamped on the ring gear somewhere. It will give the tooth count of each. Like a 4.10 would say "41 10"

Sent from my XT907 using Crapatalk

If you have a 7.5 with a full round pin the most likely ratio is 3.45. Anything more than a 3.45 gears was very uncommon in a 7.5, but like Plum said the 3.73s and 4.10s needed the added notch to get the pin in and out. The longer teeth get in the way of removing the pin, in fact on my 3.73 7.5 in my BII I can't take my pin the whole way out because where the notch stops the pin hits the ring.

The pin in my Ranger's 7.5 had the full round pin and 3.45 gears.

I highly doubt your axle came out of a Mustang, the mounting is different.

OP, adsm08 is right on the money about the notched pin. if you just want to check your gear ratio you could always lift up the rear, mark the driveshaft (whiteout or something) and while doing one full rotation of the rear tires while counting driveshaft revolutions you should be able to find your gear ratio
