i have a 86 b2 2.9 5spd. it doesn't want to go over 3000 rmp in gear i have given it a tune up changed the fuel filter. any ideas or a good place to start looking would be great.

why do you need more than 3k???

oh wait, its a 2.9.. forgot- i aint drove one in awhile. 4 years to be exact. my answer? yank that sucker out and drop a 4.0 in its spot. trust me, its well worth it...

now back on topic of the question you actually asked... lol. has it always been like this? or just started? what's your fuel pressure? maybe they engine is starving for fuel at the higher rpm? what about air? good clean filter?

Though it IS fun winding the 2.9 to 5K on a daily basis. 4.0 don't like that too much...lol

Does it only do it on an incline or something or is it that you cannot get it to go over 3K even in park / Neutral?

An easy thing to check is the Throttle cable. Check the pedal and see if there is any slack. Mine was way stretched and with about 10 zip ties later, I was all fixed.

you don't need to rev a 4.0 to 5k.... and you'll still be going quicker than a 2.9 at 5k

this something it just started doing. you can feel the engine start hesitating at about 2700rpm then theres nothing when it hit 3k

when you did the TU did you replace the rotor and cap? is the cap and rotor seated properly? did you get a couple of plug wires turned around? did you get the plug wires seated properly on both ends?
what kind of plugs did you use?
Hows your fuel pressure like?
if all you did was a tune up and it ran well, and replaced any of the above, it would seem that one of the above is suspect.

as for the 4.0. I keep telling myself its over-rated.

4.0 is not over rated... if i get a b2 for a dedicated trail rig, that's my FIRST mod...

i hope you understand, i was saying that tongue-in-cheek :icon_thumby:

I know. I just wanted to make sure you knew how highly I think about my 4.0 swap :yahoo:

haven't checked the fuel presure yet checked the compresion and is ok all tune up parts are good it has a 4in lift and 32s the lift and tires have been on it for two years and i changed the fuel filter
