15.4 volts can damage the battery and in extreme cases it could start a fire.

Yeah...little bit roll of the dice, some really bad things could result. If any way to avoid it, I would not drive it that far.

Alright then... that was easy...

I rolled the dice and won!

Our home is off grid and we have a micro hydro system that uses big ol deep cycle batteries. We regularly have to equalize them to keep them healthy, so I figured that it was basically doing the same thing and a risk worth taking. I kept the headlights on the whole way to give the system a good draw and went for it. Never had an issue. Built Ford tough I guess.

The new alternator is in and all is well. The battery cells were down a bit but nothing serious. I don't think I even got a good boil going...

So you can call this one solved and do with it what you must...
