mysterious lug nuts.

we used to lose lug nuts all the time at work on our New Holland ls180. same style nut deal, just a 3/4 nut on a stud. . .we stopped mucking with em about a year ago, bought longer studs and used castellated nuts with a cotter pin and we haven't lost one yet. HTH

try locktight we use it on all kinds of nuts and bolts.

Torque is not enough. 65 ft-lbs is what is used on a Subura and Suzuki. That style of stud-bolt is used mostly on German made vehicles and the torques on them is 80 ft-lbs. What worries me a little is that you said "lock washer". Hopefully you don't mean the washer kind that has a split somewhere on it. It should be a crush washer. Like the kind used on the F-250 and up.

In my opinion the torque should be around 140 ft-lbs and up. Re-torque each lug up to 100 ft-lbs and re-check them later on in the week. But the answer to the orginal question, if they can work loose, is yes. But they would have to apply enough weight to distort the lug wheel flange or stretch the stud. Also dumping very heavy loads on to the trailer would this too.

I didnt work on in the motor pool (was a grunt) but whenever we had to change a tire on a uparmor we just turned until we couldnt turn anymore. The trucks didnt last more than 3000 mniles anyway...

I would be willing to bet the ammo boys are going more then 15mph when there not loaded. Some arnt very bright, seen them tow things that were missing wheels altogether. But if the boss said to torque the crap out of them Id go ahead. If there 3/4 you arnt going to hurt them with 100-150ftpd, plus its better to do that then loose the lug on the flight line and have a jet suck it up.

well if he does something thats not in the publication, alot of people could get slamed.
he also said loc-tite is not authorized!

check to see if the threaded holes are a bit worn out.

Or just do what your superior has ordered, and make a note of such in the logs.
*superior officer overrode listed tech manual specification of 65 ft / lbs. Ordered to tighten to (try to get a number better than "the shit out of") ft / lbs*

Even if the nut is in a static position but subject to vibration, heat cycles, it can vibrate loose. Silly but they never vibrate tight. Do you have more problems with the nuts on the left side? Chrysler used to use left hand threads on that side for that reason. There has to be "someone" there with some kind on engineering degree or the guts to shove your problem up the chain. Hope you get some answers and the problem solved.
Dave

Ford did that a lot with their old 3/4 and one ton trucks. My dad's '80 F-350 is reverse threads on one side.

i remember when i was 14 and my grand parents was going to visit us at my dads duty station when we were in flordia and they were traveling from missouri. they were hauling a travel trailer and received a flat. they changed the flat and continued on. well some 100 or so miles later they lost the spare trailer tire from the axel. they had to spend the weekend in a small town in alabama. well it turns out that in the trailer manual it said to check the trailer lug nuts every 50 miles after a change.

i wonder if the same thing is happening here .

aggghhh you crack my code. yes us ammo guys "AINT TO SMART" sometimes BUT they way the airforce has changed here at aviano, EVERYONE and i mean EVERYONE is schared shitless to deviate from tech data, there handing out article 15' here like its candy on halloween.

Whats the actual thread size and pitch your dealing with?

is there room to throw a jam nut on there?
