Right off the website, send them an e-mail or call them and tell them what is happening and hear it right from the company, there may be a recall or TSB on the trailers that have not been brought to the attention of the public. Start there and see if they have had other concerns with this, and see what their opinions are before you start changing things or doing things out of the book.
Also, I agree that the 65ft/lb does sound low, but then again, I've seen that before, on many things, things that make you think "what?". Start your search for information with the manufacture, and if they are no help, then start experimenting with things. Also, if you can't tag the nuts, just take a sharpie or paint pen and mark the nut and stud. Washes off with a little brake clean/varsol/wire wheel, and its a way to keep track of them all.
