My idea of a Shelby Ranger if there would have been one.

Ok, thought you meant higher gear number, giving you a lower overall gearing. Whats it turning at like 55 and 65 now?

55 mph = 2000 RPM
65 is about 2200 RPM I think...
90 MPH = 3100 RPM

And it's like it has power in reserve.. To me pulling a mountain at 25 mph in OD is pretty darn impressive for a 6 cyl... The 04 Mustang GT I had was horrible in the mountains with the 5 speed.. It had no power or too much power.. didn't seem to have a happy spot. With the Ranger 4th or OD is great in the mountains.. it's so good I think I can do ok with higher gears... I could see going with a 3:73 or lower for racing but I'd like the perfect gear for road trips and cruising...

look into 3.27 gears for your 8.8

My thoughts exactly!! Or mabye a 293/308 ish setup. Someone must know of an online calculator to punch in ur tranny, tires, and rear gears to give you the engine speed on the highway and what not. I cant seem to dig one up, but I know they are out there.

Ok, crawled through all your posts to find your rear tire size. The m50d has a final drive of 0.80:1 and with 275/40r17's, 3.45 rear, it gives me 2000rpms for 55, and ~2300 rpm for 65mph, which is just what you said.

Punching in a 3.08 rear, it gives you 62mph at 2k rpms, and 46mph at 1500. Giving you about 1800 for 55, and 2100 for 65rpm, which is about where I would be happy with.

Multi, if you were closer I would give you my 3.27's in a heartbeat:D

I think that would be perfect with the torque band being so low in the RPM range... I'll hit up the JY and see if I can find an 8.8 with a 3.08 here soon.
I would assume turning lower rpm would save fuel or is that not always true?

In general yes, but you do have to watch out not to be over lugging the engine. Just because your rpms are low, dosent mean that your injectors arent working at 90% duty cylce to help make the power you need down low. You need to find a happy medium. Seeing that the gas mileage your getting now is pretty good, im guessing you wont really gain much in milage, it will be more of a change for driving characteristics. I have a 94 Caddy Fleetwood that is several inches longer than an old suburban, with a chevy 350 LT1 in it. It prob weighs in at like close to 5klbs with me in it. I get better gas milage at 70mph, than 65, because the rear end is really geared too low. It has 2.56's in it now, giving me about 22mpg on the highway, but I was only getting about 20mpg when I was going 65ish. I would love to go to a 3.08 in my car, to give it more snap, and prob up my mpg to 24 or so.

The gearing is soo close to boarderline in my car, that at 69mph, the car will down shift out of overdrive on the same two hills going home. But with cruise at 70, it dosent shift.
