starting to gather parts needed for an SAS. i have read all the negative about doing this on a daily driver but i am tired of the wheel bearing issues and tire wear.

going spring over, rear shackle, high steer conversion, dana 30.

question is what would be the best candidate for the axle? i work in a salvage yard and have access to about any axle i could use.

The d30 with out the quick axle disconect(or whatever its called), with the hubs would be the best im pretty sure.

you should post a build thread of it :icon_thumby:

My truck is a DD and it has a D30 SAS. I see nothing wrong with it, does much better then when it had the D28 under it plus I can do more.

One thing I do recommend is going with coils.

If you do go with a D30, get one without the CAD and with the large u-joints from an XJ jeep. Right now mine has the CV joints and havent had a problem (yet).

personally its a waste of time for him, especially since at a yard he has access to everything, i would just get a HP 44 have it shortened 6" and go that route, atleast that way u will end up with a much stouter axle to begin with and u wont be cussing your truck out when u break the d30...

all the threads over and over about d30 swaps, but i have yet to actually see anyone that has long term proved advantages and i have yet to see one do any sort of actual wheeling aswell

if u can do it with d30 parts for free then do it, if u have to spend money, might aswell not waste time and do it right the first time

Its only a wate of time if he plans on doing stuff outside the D30's limitations. But iof its for a DD, why would you really need to go so large on the axle.

95-99 xj
297 joints, non cad, high pinion.

before 95 was smaller joints and after 99 was low pinion.
i know the xx-99 is right. i'm not sure on the 95 exactly

or a newer wrangler(rubicon) D44. that way u dont need to shorten it.(being u work in a junk yard u could find one there.
but if the D30 fits your needs do it.

A rubi d44 is just a d30 with bigger ring gear.. Same wheel joints.. Axle spline count is a little different. Is stronger but not worth the extra money.

a rubi D44.... is a d44.....

yes well kinda.. but not anything like a waggy 44 or ford 44 or other dana 44's....

just google it. once you find the real info the center section is strong (R&P), but the outers are the same. the axle shafts have more splines on the inside.. but the it uses the same joints and outers. for the price of the rubi d44, to me it would not be worth it. the R&P is not the weak point of the d30.

just scroll thru

"not sure if it will bolt up. But like posted above it is a dana 44 center section, dana 30 axe tubes, dana 30 ball joints, dana 30 outer knuckles.

a standard HD dana 44 front still uses dana 30 ball joints as well...."

and so on...
heck i could be wrong-- but with what i'm reading...

If you want to use leaf springs, you need a YJ Wrangler D30...

been studying leaf springs, a lot of people seem to be using wagoneer leafs up front. wouldn't the wrangler springs work just as well? they are a lot easier to get and not nearly as pricey.

Wrangler springs are also a lot softer than you'll need.

lol, I've been a Jeeper for a LONG time! I find it entertaining that I log onto TRS to check out some stuff for my "new to me" BII and find where everyone is wanting to do D30 swaps... In the Jeep world the D30 is a low as you go. Beginner, waste of money axle. I've broken D30 shafts open/open on 31s. It's just not the way to go.

Now, HP44 on the other hand will have you sittin pretty. Search for Waggy 44. It's a low pinion but it's alreay the same width as a D30. :) You have to watch for the disconnect version of these too. You want to look for a 80-82 Jeep Wagoneer.

Got a HP44 SAS swap in this BII. Love it so far.
