hey need some help.. the motor is in and bolted up to the bell housing but i needed to turn the crank pulley on the front so the ring gear and torque converter will spin around on the back, so i put the 15/16 socket on there and went to turn her over and she wont turn, even got the cheater bar on the end of the ratchet but shes seized solid. she was free before i bolted it to the trans..i got 2 bolts on the torque converter, should i put the starter on her an try to turn her over anyways or is 2 bolts on the torque converter not enough to start her up? if i could get her going and un seized i would then put the other 2 bolts on the torque converter.. what do you guys think is wrong?
thanks,, really need some help here

If you can't spin it by hand, chances are you'll mess up whatever's binding if you try to spin it with the starter.

torque converter isn't set all the way into the trans.pull the trans again and make sure it is fully engaged...hopefully you didn't break the trans pump.

^^^ there should be either two or three clicks u will hear when it is fullyengaged on the pump

there are three different items the torque converter needs to engage on.first is the drive shaft(or input shaft,if you prefer).this is the thin shaft in the middle.second is the stator.these are the splines surrounding the input shaft.these two are multi tooth splines and as such are not difficult to engage-the hard one is the pump.this is driven by the two flat spots on the end of the converter tube.there are only two positions that they will engage, and can be a bit tough.the best way to get it in place is to stand the trans up on it's tailshaft, and turn the convertor till you hear two distinct clunks with it dropping a bit on each.when it is fully seated you will not have room to fit your fingers behind it.
when it is all the way in,if it doesn't turn easilly, the pump rotor is broken.if this is the case, you will have a chance to learn all kinds of new stuff.

Yep, you probably screwed the torque converter. I know, I did the same thing. Take the trans off and pull the t.c. Look at the round end with two flat spots, if it's dented in any where around the circumference, it's [90% chance it's] toasted. Buy a 'new' one and make sure it's all the way in, listen to gwaii. Run a straight edge across the bell housing and it should be sunk in [IIRC] 1/4" . You could double check that 1/4" by measuring out from the block to the t.c. mounting surface and transferring that measurement to the trans.
Good luck,
Richard

actually it's a little bit more...the mounting surface is 1" in from the bell to block joint.when fully pushed in,it will go another 1/4" or so.so fully seated should be about 1 1/4"+/- in.the torque converter may be damaged, but the pump is most at risk.

god damnit, i almost want to put a tarp around her an push her out back an be done with it. that motor was a bitch to get in ,, a mechanic done it with me an he even said it was one of the hardest he done. i might just drop the trans from the bottom so i dont have to screw with the motor

thanks for the help gwaii,, +1 rep for ya

Easiest way is to pull them out together. The time you spend screwing around matching it up and trying to get the bolts in and tight, it's better to do them both together. You can spend a half hour with a 13mm combination wrench trying to tighten one bell housing bolt. It takes 10 minutes to free the tranny (and take the radiator out) so you can pull it with the motor.

well im not all that concerened about pulling the radiator lol..

but nah ill jus crawl under her an pull the trans

Why was it so hard to get in? What engine/trans did u put in it?
U had the front clip off when u did this?

Just wondering, I've never had a prob getting one in a full size, not saying u didn't have a unique situation.

stock 351m went in, its a 400 block with different heads and crank so its still a big and heavy motor, yea the front clip was off
