Manual Transmission won't go into gear

It's just 1st and 2nd that I have a problem with since I do frequent driving in the city.

thats the part that makes it weird. i know on brakes what causes that with vacuum assist leaking but for your truck, the only temp related issue with the transmission would be if you are low on fluid but that would not make it hard to shift into gears unless something is locking up. and you would know that with other symptoms.

you could check the transmission fluid and make sure its up. if that fixes the problem, let us know

you should have two plugs on the side of hte transmission, one above hte other. the lower is the drain. usually, to check fluid in standard transmissions, you take out the top plug and see if the fluid is right at the edge of hte plug with your finger tip. if its not, than you add fluid. that is usually though so make sure and google how to check it for your transmission

At first I was over filled but I took that fluid out by just taking out the fill hole plug. It was probably like half a water bottle more than it should've been.

so than it has to be something in the hydraulic side of your system. does any of it run very close to the exhaust? maybe its getting warmed by exhaust and something weird is happening? i don't know if it could but i suppose its possible.

hopefully one of the other guys has an idea and can add something as they log in later

Yeah thats what I noticed that it's next to the exhaust but how would that be possible if the old system wasn't having that problem? Should I use the exhaust wrap? Or a heat shield?

you can put something around the clutch line for now, to test it out. wrap it in aluminum foil to see if it helps. that was an old school test method on carbureted vehicles to see if they were getting vapor locked from the engine heat on the fuel line. my karmann ghia always had aluminum foil on the fuel lines to help fight heating hte lines up.

I know this is a super old thread but I'm desperate I've missed work all week over it. So it started being difficult to shift into 5th and reverse then it would be fine then started being difficult shifting into other gears at times. Monday I went to go to work and it would only shift into reverse. I had already ordered a clutch kit a couple months prior so I just started tearing I to it. I won't go into the nightmare details of all that but needless to say after finally getting everything back together last night and bleeding the clutch it won't engage (pedal still loose) and my shifter won't go into any gears. Tried starting it and it just lunches forward without the clutch engaging. The flywheel, pilot bearing clutch and pressure plate and slave cylinder are all new. Any help would be appreciated. I can't afford to miss anymore work I'm already going to be in trouble with no check coming next week

It would be best to start a new thread. More likely to have someone see it

I agree with the above but since I'm here I'm 100% sure your master cylinder has air in it which really sucks to bleed out since the piston points backward from how it needs to to get the air out of it... The "right" way to bleed the master cylinder sucks as it involves removing it and the hose assembly and pointing the hoses in a way that puts the hose from the reservoir pointing up and pressing the rod until it gets hard then reinstalling. The dumb thing that works sometimes (I've had good luck but others don't) is to press the pedal to the floor and slip your foot off the pedal and repeat like 10 times. The other thing people do is to climb under the dash, take the pedal sensor off then take the C clip out that keeps the piston in the master cylinder and pull it back to bleed there which sounds messy so I haven't done it...

I have the most luck pumping the clutch pedal with my hand. Down AND up as fast as you can without breaking anything. Then bleed as normal. Almost need three people to do it. One under truck with bleeder, one beside truck working pedal, and one keeping the reservoir full.

Has anyone figured out a fix? I am having the same issue.

I have replaced the clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, new clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, new shifter bushings, replaced the transmission fluid, and bled the cutch....the truck still won’t go into gear. What am I missing!?!?

This was the original issue of why I started the project. The truck will start in neutral, but not go into gear while the engine is running. The truck won’t start when a gear is engaged.
Did you find a solution? Same is happening to me
