Manual Transmission won't go into gear

Welp... Either your clutch is shot, or there is a problem with the master or slave cylinder not engaging the clutch. If you can't see leakage, line swelling, or physical damage from the master cylinder I'd be inclined to think you're simply due for a new clutch and slave cylinder. (No point fixing one and not the other since both require removing the transmission)

If your clutch is working fine, then its probably your synchros. I used to work at a transmission shop doin the R&R while the guru did the bench work. Bad/worn synchros were a common problem.

Very true but it would be odd for all the synchros to go bad at once. If it was only an issue shifting in an out of one particular gear I'd say a bad synchro too, but not being able to get it into ANY gear is a little suspect and points more towards a clutch engagement issue IMO.

True, I would start with clutch anyways, its a common culprit.

Sounds like what I had after my M5OD swap. Transmission sat with no fluid in it. All the synchros we're stuck.

Syncros I tells ya, Synchros!

Watch some synchronized swimming fails videos, it will explain what's going on....

When I had a similar problem, it was the slave cylinder for the clutch on the way out. Changed the slave and the master (bought a kit since not all connections between the two are the same) and it fixed the problem. The slave was also leaking fluid. Enough to make the slave cylinder wet but not drip out of the bell housing. Pull the inspection plug and take a peek at your slave cylinder.

Did this get solved? I had a 92 ranger with a 3.0 with a similar issue. I could shift while moving, but throwing it into gear at a stop was difficult and caused some grinding. Turned out to be a messed up pilot bearing inside the flywheel. It had just enough friction to turn the input shaft. Hope this helps. O know this is an old thread.

I have a 94 Ranger 5 speed manual transmission. Starts and runs great until you drive it about 30 minutes. Then it throws a fit. If you stop at a store and come back out, it starts right up but no gears. It goes into gear but will not move. Wait a few minutes it seems to cool down and then it will take off. As long as you keep it rolling it does fine but if you catch a light you are stuck until it decides to go. May be thirty seconds and may be 5 minutes. When it does take off and you push it , you can feel it slipping. Get home pull into drive , put in reverse, kill engine let off clutch and it rolls back into street. Let it set overnight it is fine but will repeat process if I drive it 20 to 30 minutes.

I'm having the same problem. I got a 01 ford ranger 4.0 4x4. Replaced the clutch, flywheel, pilit bearing, slave and master cylinder and trans fluid. Works perfectly fine at first but after driving about 20 minutes I can feel the clutch pedal get a little softer and harder to shift into 1st but would still go into 2nd until 2nd becomes to hard and so on. If i were to turn it off it would shift smoothly. When I hold the clutch in first it feels like it wants to start moving even with the pedal to the floor. Idk what it could be.

you are losing pressure on the slave cylinder so the clutch is slowly engaging. something in the hydraulic part of your system is leaking slightly. very slightly. could be one of the pistons in master is letting fluid weep by but you should be able to see fluid either around the rod from the master or inside the housing at the slave. its very slight though so it might not be coming out to where you can see it yet. i would start at the master.

If it was leaking wouldn't it not go in gear when turned off either?

no. you can put it in gear without the clutch when the truck is off.

and really, if you practice with the standard transmission, you will be able to shift when moving with on clutch either. you will be able to apply light pressure and feel the gears slip together and be able to work through the gears with no third pedal at all. you just apply the light pressure and adjust the rpms till the gears match and it will slide right into gear

Okay but when it cools down it doesn't have the problem. Only once it's been running for a few minutes does it have the problem
