Morning all, first off a bit about me. I have a fair bit of experience rebuilding transmissions. Ford T5, T4 , chevy super T10, and a few others.

I dug into my first m50D last night and they seem to be a well built unit. My questions is what do you guys think their max HP/ Torque ratings are.

I will be going through the tyranny, and adjusting all end float and setting clearances. We run at around 7400 RPM max. But stay at 7000-74]0 RPM for almost the entire race.

I don't believe they ever put that box behind anything with much more then 200 horse. It will most likely hold more because they typically error to the short side of things.

It is only behind a 4 cylinder. We did dyno the car but I honestly can't remember the numbers off the top of my head.

I guess we will find out one way or another

M5OD-R1 (4 cylinder/small v-6) and M5OD-R2 (early SC) - 320 ft lbs.
M5OD-R1HD (4.0s) and M5OD-R2 (late SC) - 330 ft lbs.
M5OD-R2 trucks - 300 ft.lbs.
Difference is how low 1st gear is.

Note: Nothing swaps between M5OD-R1 and R2...well maybe the filler plug.

They were never used in anything that rev'd over 5,500; so I don't know how they will hold up at 7k+... I would have thought for those speeds you would want T5 (maybe with S-10 tail housing to put shifter in nice spot).

The M5OD handles a decent amount of torque, but it does not shift particularly well and I think you might be frustrated with that if you are using it for serious racing.

Late reply here, but I second what rubydist said about difficult shifting, with qualifications. Never done real "racing," but my b3000 definitely never shifted especially smoothly. Have to be careful about the angle you pull or push on the long, wobbly shifter. And from 2nd to 3rd make sure you swing it perfectly 90 degrees to neutral before pushing up to 3rd. Truck gets harder to shift with each year that passes, but not bad for 215k miles lol. Seems like the synchronizers are worn out on 1st gear especially; have to put it in 2nd usually to get it in 1st.
That being said, when I am in a hurry and occasionally wind it out to 5k rpm (0-60 in a brisk 20 seconds!), don't generally have much trouble shifting! Maybe synchronizers work better at high rpm. But also I've driven it long enough that I pretty much know its quirks. My former boss who taught me to drive a tractor once said, "It takes a while to become one with the machine." Unfortunately I didn't have time to become one with that machine because that was the only year I drove a tractor lol.

put a hurst on it and it shifts better for fun take-offs. i just did it yesterday, not purposely, because traffic was coming faster then i initially thought and i had to gun it since the front wheels were in the street and i couldn't back up in time.

the 3.0 of power lite em up and the hurst short throw worked right through 1-2-3 with ease

Another thread back from the dead!

Whatever, since it’s popped back up I’ll just move it to the appropriate section…
