I lost all original keys to my 2002 ford ranger and was wondering if there was a way to get keys made without having to replace the whole ignition system, it is a chipped key type with a stock anti theft system. hoping this isn't a $700 mistake Thank you MarkDEnergySaver@yahoo.com

locksmith can do it and sometimes cheaper than a dealer

Yes, Ford can cut you a new key if you have VIN and proof of ownership, but...... Key needs to be added to PATS anti-thief system, before key will start truck, Ford has to have the truck there to do that.
Ford dealers don't have mobile service so you would need to have the truck towed into them.

Many locksmiths can now add keys to PATS and they offer mobile service, call around and get prices, and they of course can make you a new key.

I would get 3 keys, if you lose one you can get a 3rd and add it to PATS yourself, but you need two working keys to do that.
If you have one key and lose it......well you are where you are now
If you have two keys and lose one......you will need to get another key for back up and pay someone to add it to PATS
If you have 3 keys and lose one.....you can get a 3rd and add it yourself.

No one plans on losing keys, lol, but it does happen.

Dealers generally only keep that info for 10 years anyways, a locksmith is definitely the better option IMO

Yeup, anything past 10 years old we can't do it with the VIN

thank You so much AAA has hooked me up with a lock smith that can add the PATS data I really appreciate all the quick responses.

A dealer needs 2 new pats keys minimum. A skilled locksmith can cut a key without even removing the lock cylinder from the door. A locksmith could also make you a pats key and depending on how they do it "hack" the system to think you have 2 keys when you only have one.

I would recommend 2 minimum genuine Ford keys rather than aftermarket trash.

Dealer can no longer look up key codes for vehicles older than 2006. They rolled over the database. A locksmith is the best bet now. You will probably still need to get it to a dealer for key programming, but if they don't erase all the keys they can do only one. I would get 3 made and have all the old ones erased.

I would also take steps to ensure that you don't loose all your keys. My preferred method is to get a $2 hardware store key made and keep it in the house or your wallet. Then if you loose all the PATS keys you can just have that one copied.
