i was wondering what i would have to do to get rid of the egr stuff in my 96 4.0l ranger thanks

Remove Egr. Block off everything it attached too...Im kinda interested in doing this as well. What do you hope to gain from it tho?

The EGR doesn't hurt antyhing.

But when I did my swap to a 4.0 I made it a point to get a donor vehicle without EGR...

Why you ask? well, my issue with EGR isn't the EGR itself but the failure prone feedback sensor that tells the PCM that the EGR is working correctly.

Yeah I'm kinda contemplating removing mine to make my truck more simple and reliable...nothing can go wrong with it if it isn't there :icon_twisted: My question is tho if I remove it what can I expect? Less MPG's and power? More MPG's and power? Also If I did remove it and got a tuner for my truck would it be beneficial to mention that I have the egr removed?

dont want to steal your thread...but if i remove all the EGR stuff off my 97 4.0. would it throw a code?

as far as im aware, the egr is just for emissions and it doesnt hurt or help the engine power. and yes if you remove it a code will show up

well i guess i cant do that then...NYS won't pass a vehicle with the CEL light on....even doing my own inspections doesn't make a difference.

if you get a tuner or have a custom tune done they can turn off the egr in the computer so it wont throw the code and will pass inspection

what can you expect? a check engine light. why do you want to remove it?

it doesn't help or hurt performance.

its installed to reduce combustion temperatures and reduce nox emissions. it lets exhaust gas into the combustion chamber to take up space so less of a fuel charge will fit.

this only happens at cruising speeds, at idle and full throttle the EGR is not working

i just got done rebuilding my 4.0 and i got rid of my egr. wasa trying a different idea and it wasnt working so i threw a 93 intake on it and it has a check engine light for egr solenoid, and egr vaccum.. but you can get a tuner and get it out of the computer or go to ford for 85 dollars and they can re tune your comp.

i can get an older style intake for nothin plus my egr is broken and dont want to put another in incase it happens again and it goes back to runnin like a bag well i im gona rip it all off today and get an older intake and one of those diagnostic tools can get rid of the code it throws.
thanks for the help

What part of hot gas that is mostly already combusted getting reintroduced in your intake doesn't hurt performance? Egr is for one and one thing only. Emissions.

I am not sure how it is setup on my 2.9 or your 4.0 for that matter. I haven't ventured that far yet, but on my Focus you can just loop the vacuum hose on the DPFE sensor that tells the egr to open and it won't ever tell it to and won't throw a code.

no vacuum hose on these later rangers. two tubes coming from the exhaust go into it.

Not actually vacuum lines. Couldn't find a pic of a 4.0, but here is one off a 5.0. Same theory. One end goes to exhaust the other to the actuator. The 2 smaller tubes go to the DPFE sensor that registers the exhaust pressure and determines whether the egr should be opened or not. If someone could post some pics of the 4.0 setup I might be of some help. I went looking around on my 2.9 and actually couldn't find anything on it. Its either buried behind the intake or it doesn't have any emissions. I'll look farther into it. Here's the pic:

For those of you who don't care about the CEL, you can just go to Autozone and buy a manual fuel pump block off plate and use it to block off the egr where it attaches to the intake. Like so:
