My apologies i'm sure this has been posted before but I could not find much on the subject....I have an 03 3.0L Edge ( bone stock ) and am looking to get any improvement I can in the mpg dept...I do a lot of city driving primarily...even just a 2-3 mpg improvement or more would be great....appreciate any info you can send my way..thanks

buy a hybrid my 4.0 needs your gas...

jk

drive it easier.. make sure that your service is up to date, keep your tires well inflated, don't haul any extra weight you don't need. Any money that you put into mods is probably better put into gas as it will take a while to get your money back from the fuel savings.

What are you getting for fuel economy currently?

If your getting 19+, do not expect to get a 2-3 miles per gallon increase.

SD if your truck idles and runs smoothly that is about all one can hope for.. Changing to new plugs or wires won't help at all!
But I will attempt an answer.
Use the sparks that are the exact factory installs.. Using a different brand cannot ever be better and in many cases will be worse than the factory plugs.

Then for filters..whatever is available in stock form at the parts house..

OIL is your choice..NO BRAND will cause better gas milage. Oil simply lubricates the bearings. Look at all the fancy oil ads and then make your choice.. I use whatever is on sale as I believe all oils are the same.

There is no reason to change the plug gap from the factory specs.

Now to the meat of the matter. My 02 4 litre has 5 gears. I almost always use only 3 of them!! I only use all 5 when entering an expressway from a stop. In normal traffic I use only 1, 3, and 5.. Or sometimes If the street is slightly downhill I use 2, 4, and 5..
I keep the rpm low never going to 3,000! I shift at 1600 to 2000 rpm. My milage in the Texas heat with the AC running full blast is 18 on every tank! I havn't had it on the hiway this summer but I would expect a solid 20 on a trip.

So the advice here is to keep your FOOT out of it and see what happens to the milage.

I agree 100%. I was just curious if his truck was in good running order. Try for 1 tank to drive like there is an egg under the pedal and see if that makes a difference.

Appreciate all the advice.......I never really get on the gas at all on my truck.....no speed demon here.....i do feel a tiny tiny roughness at idle but my truck runs really strong....i just dont know what im doing wrong here...i mean its a standard 3.0L edge with auto trans....i really was hoping for some better mileage..i just sold my older ranger which was a 4.0L 4x4 and it was getting about 11 in the city also.....bizzare..what size tires are you running and what pressure?..I have firestone at's at 235/75/15 at 35 psi

The tires are only a small amount too tall for perfect gas milage. Did you change the speedometer gear when you installed the taller tires? If NOT then the milage is better than you think!!
Also try never using more than 1/2 of the skinny pedal.. see if that helps for a tank or so. At WOT a lot of fuel is going into that engine.

whats the ideal size tire for the edge....dosnt it come standard with the 235/75/15?...also..how do I regear the speedo..I need to pull the dash anyway because I have a light out on the inst cluster.

Look on the drivers door post to find the tires tht came on that ride... The speedo gear is housed in the tranny..
