What did YOU do today?

Whelp ranger Sunday was a bust 😑 woke up ready to make progress and definitely just made a bunch of opposite progress.. what's the word for that? Oh yeah CONgress 😜 ha.

Really though, not happy. The entire bit of frame behind the driver's spring hanger was too thin to weld my reinforcement plate too.. I thought I made it large enough to reach healthy bits of frame but.. kept blowing through in spots.. had no choice but to hack it all out. Then.. didn't have a big enough piece of steel to fill it in so.. early day.

Obviously.. way less than ideal.. straight up shitty really but... I'll soldier on. If this was a 4x4 rig Id probably be looking for a new frame at this point but.. I'll be able to cobble 'er well enough to be a drag vehicle. Ugh.

I have AG tires on the rear filled with RV antifreeze and 55# wheel weights… I haven’t touched the fronts yet but they need tubes and I’ve thought of putting a little weight in them just because it gets a little light on the nose going up the one bank at my property. Not enough to be tippy, but enough that if the grass and weeds are tall the front tires like to skip along instead of letting me turn at the top. Of course, once I get the dump truck and skid steer working I intend to get some dirt and flatten that slope out.

That said, it’s always been hard to turn. I used to take a beverage to mow with but between the bumps on my property, dust, and needing both hands to turn sometimes (I’ve thought about a spinner but I don’t think I could get enough leverage), I gave up taking a drink along. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to turn. I do need to go through the bearings and bushings for the steering since I don’t remember when that was last done but I’m not sure I’ll see much improvement. If it wouldn’t be so stupid expensive for a hydro pump and small ram, I’d definitely do it.

I think I’m going to fix up my pull behind brush hog a little and put it up for sale, then use that money towards a 3-point brush hog for the farm tractor and call it good. I like the little tractor, it’s nice with the automatic hydrostatic rear to just get it cranked up and cruise after cutting in the edges, but my backup tractor needs work and my farm tractor doesn’t have a good mower yet so it’s a frustration.

Get yourself a hydration pack so you can sip on the hose and keep both hands free to wrestle with the steering wheel. Or you can get one of those hats that hold beverages in them. I'm sure the neighbors and the borough will love the latter.

I did some programming of the new dual band radio and cleaning up of the frequency list on the other ham radios. There was stuff on there that I just don't see me using.

The little brunette and I went to First Baptist Atlanta (f. 1848) this morning. Most know it as Charles Stanley’s church. I’ve always been and still am Catholic, but Charles Stanley was the real deal, a true soldier in Christ. He passed a couple years ago, and today is the fifth anniversary of Dr. Anthony George who replaced him. He is as inspirational as Stanley, but adds a modern twist and a little humor.

About 40 years ago FBA moved out of the church building downtown and into a mega facility expected for a mega church (that is actually quite close to my home). Like other mega churches, they have a world class orchestra and choir program, state of the art television coverage, you name it. I don’t really care about all that jazz, but I think it’s great that they pass His word all the way around the world, and I go occasionally for the message, which is always outstanding.

Today I went for a few reasons. In addition to my own needs and desires, I went to pray for @JoshT and his family, and to ask Him to inspire me with some words that may comfort Josh. I think the Man upstairs gave me a few thoughts.

I don’t know much about Josh‘s father, other than what he has shared on the post. But the man sounded solid is an oak, an excellent father and friend, not only to Josh, but obviously to all the others who came to celebrate his life. The sermon today was based on Isaiah, and the thought I had was to remind Josh that, his father remains alive, not only in heaven, and not only in his heart and memories, but he remains alive in Josh, in Josh‘s family, and in his fathers friends.

It’s hard to look at oneself, but Josh must realize how much of who he is, what he knows, his good character, his good works, his positive influence over others, etc., all is his father living through him. Whatever Josh does to lead his family and protect them, he still does it with his father, it’s just that his father now runs in his heart and his veins and his mind, always by his side, just not physically anymore.

And if Josh knows his father‘s characteristics that he may not see in himself, I’m sure he can see them in his mother, in his father‘s friends, and his father‘s family, every place his father touched. He is all around, quiet and strong as you described, never yielding, always inspiring.

I barely know Josh, but what I know of him is a good man, the kind of man you want as a friend and neighbor, who can be strong in your community, in your circles. Josh, where do you think that came from?

May God bless you and your family, may He comfort you all, and may you have the joy and peace and pride of knowing you carry your father forward in all you do.

And if there are any nay sayers or non-believers, you guys know me a little bit. Do you really think I could’ve had these thoughts today without His assistance?

🙏🙏🙏

Why would I want to do that? We have the TRS pizza chef on the trip with us.

I think when I got the thing the front wheel bushings were completely gone and I found a bearing update and I think that's when mine started steering great... these are known to steer better than the MTD mowers and I've had that experience...

Brush hogs are nice to have as long as you don't need a low close cut, mine leaves stuff like 4" tall... If you weren't so far away I'd give you a heck of a deal on one that likely just needs some corn header grease instead of oil :)
Yeah, it’s been awhile since I looked that stuff up. I think I’d like to do bearings on the steering shaft too. Been trying to put it off so I could deal with vehicles…

Family friend has an extra 5’ with no tail wheel, might have to get on him about borrowing that. I’m tempted to see if one of the places selling new ones will take payments…

I found someone with a 6’ finish mower that needs a spindle but he said it may not work for me since it’s all pretty much sloped ground

A cup holder on the farm tractor would be a solution too, dust will be behind me and it steers really nice.

Thank you for the words and prayers Rick. I'm a believer though I don't attend these days. Not sure that I've been to a service in 20 years. You mentioned being a catholic, but going to a Baptist church. I actually grew in the Baptist church, dad did too. He and his mother were actually founding members of the church I attended back then. One of the reasons I kind of left was that I didn't agree with the path the money in the church thought they wanted to take. They seemed to want to grown it into a mega church. Well not actually a mega church, but into something much larger than it was. What made that church what it was was the small size and family atmosphere that it would have lost. Fortunately that never happened, but I'd already somewhat moved out of the area.

Friday night and Saturday morning I was actually thinking I would stay over and go to Sunday service with mom this morning. After all of the people at and after the service, I was peopled out and didn't want to be around anyone today. Perhaps once things have settled back down a bit.

Yes, they are! I want to say around 2016 dad bought a 30(ish) horse 4wd LS tractor with bucket. I recall him saying on more than one ocasion that it was too handy not to have one and he wanted something that would be here for us to use later. He had a Yanmar before that, pretty certain it is still back there too, but it was a pain to keep running. The tractor was one of the things dad left behind that mom kind of wonders what to do with because she won't use it. I definitely let her know that it wasn't going anywhere.

Know that he had a couple of decks for it. One or two brush hog decks, I think he got one with it and had another from the Yanmar. Finish mower deck, box blade, harrow, and other stuff. A grapple to replace the bucket. Don't know where all of it is at at the moment, some at their house, some at the huning club. Certainly not going anywhere, and once the weather cools off some of it is coming out to my place to clean up the property.

Now off to bed for a few hours and see if I can stand to deal with people when I get into work.

a 6' finish mower is likely too much for that, if I remember right what you have is around 25hp like mine, my 5' finish mower takes a fair amount of power if it's really chewing even going slow... a brush hog without tail wheel if adjusted to work right would be fine, they can live off the skids just fine as long as there's somewhere for grass to get out, my deck is all the same level other than the inlet end so I use the tail wheel as a way to maintain the exit... I haven't tried the two that came with the Ford I got to see if they're any different...

I think I changed the bushings on my steering shaft but I don't remember... all I know is my current mower is much nicer than the old Montgomery Wards branded MTD, I was tired of that variable belt system and how often it went through belts that weren't easy to change...

Today I pulled more weeds in the shop driveway and burnt some more, I think I'm at the extent I can burn safely now... also trimmed some blackberries in the driveway and such, got the Ford 2000 into the shop driveway so I can pull the injector pump or whatever I decide to do (might pull the starter instead and just pull the business end of the pump out).

The guy with the 6’ finish mower said he was using it behind an 8N and it worked but his yard was a lot flatter than mine, he said it didn’t do so nice on slopes. He said he could do about as nice of a job with his 5’ brush hog so when the spindle went, he just stopped using the finish mower.
