I am looking for some sugestions, on how to get a little more powwer out of this 4.0:icon_confused:

Take the damn K&N off and throw it away.. For more get up and go change rear gears!

well big jim as you can see his truck is an stx so changing the rear gears wont help considering its a 4x4.

now to the OP you an buy a fair few bolt ons to give you a little more kick.

you can buy underdrive pulleys, good for a few hp.

headers are available but if you decide to go that route do your whole exhaust to achieve best results.

bamachips (sp?) makes the xcal tuner that is good for newer trucks (95+) so your out of luck there.

and perhaps the easiest thing to gain a few ponies is go take the electric fan off a taurus and slap it in... easy to do in an afternoon

Ummm, care to explain how changing gears on a 4x4 won't help with get-up and go?

I vote, don't waste the money on any bolt-on modifications. Nothing that you can bolt onto an engine in an afternoon is going to do a damn bit of good. If it was cheap or easy to make more power, your truck would have had more to begin with.

I'm with Jim on this one, gears are the best way to go... You could also look at forced induction, or an engine swap, but for the money, gears gears gears. Just be sure you change out the front and rear, or don't plan on using 4x4...

I'm curious as well.....also, what does it being an STX have to do anything?

But like everyone said, Gears are the best option. Or press the gas pedal further. Or down shift.

The STX trucks generally came with the "optional" gear ratio.

But on a 1993 4.0 that meant 3.73's

4.10's will definatly get you "bang for the buck"

Guaran-damn-tee'd 10% acceleration iimprovement.

sorry guys i should have been clearer...

a friend of mine was atually in the situation where he had a 4x4(chev) and to acelerate faster he changed only his rear gears... blew the transfer case the first time he used it obviously. Never said he was smart.

I mentioned the STX as arent all stx's 4x4? I should have said changing the rear gears ONLY won't be a good idea.

And some of the bolt ons are worth the money the e-fan especially

Sorry for my crappy wording I usually proofread my posts but had to leave in a hurry!

I was kinda figuring on gears, I just did not know what ratio would be best, I know I would have to do front and back at the same time. Anyways I was just asking to find out what there is to use for now, but still be able to keep when I am able to build my other 4.0. Because sometime in the future I would like to take my extra motor out of my parts truck, and have it bored over, change cam, and have the heads and intake ported and polished etc. etc. But that will not be anytime soon, probably a few years down the road. Thats one reason I was thinking gears, because they could stay when I do the 4.0 build. Anything that would help for now, but still be able to use with the other motor would be great. Anyways thanks guys.

gears is the answer.. But before changing you should know what is in there now and what size tires you have now and will intall in the future.. So you will know what to install..
So the question is what tires you have on there and what gears are in there now?
Big JIm

The tires on it now are 30x9.50x15, I highly doubt I would ever go bigger than 32'' tires, as for then gears it has 3:73's in it right now.

yep gears front and back would be good but i wouldnt say its your only option.

You should do an eletric fan your motor will rev much more freely and till give you a few hp for new to nothing.... and it can obviously stay with the next 4.0.

Well Red, tell ya what. 30 inch tires and 3:73 is a great economy gearing. Was it mine I'd leave it alone.
My ride has 30's on it and 4:11 gears. It would be Ok if it had your 3:73 gears iin it too.
I wouldn't spend the two grand to change out the gears if I had your ride.

Now when you do go to those 32 inchers I'd for sure change gears. Prolly going to 4:56 ones. But if there was any doubt about going to taller tires I'd be using 4:88 gears...but not now for sure.

Well I am not really worried about having a economical truck or I would have kept the 4cyl. ranger I had before this one, anyways I am planing on lifting and going to something bigger probably 32 this winter, thats why I am looking for more power now so I can spread out the costs over a little time, what gears would you suggest the 4:56's or 4:88's

Uhhh... No.

An electric gain only produces the claimed gains at rpm's that
most people will never take their 4.0 to... much less "linger"
there for long enough for the lower drag to make a difference.

In two years with my 4.0 I've "found" the rev limiter once
and I was purposely "looking" for it....

Personally my complaint with the clutch fan was that it
was too prone to slipping until the radiator warmed more
than I liked.

I have no issue with electric fans "in addition to" the factory
clutch fan where I have an issue with electric fans is
"instead of" the mechanically driven fan.

That dog just doesn't hunt.

Now for "tires", you need gears...

I was gonna say, i though electric fans were about the same as a mechanical one in terms of hp cause what you remove in mechanical stress you have to make up for in electical power which makes the engine work just as much to produce the same cooling results, ergo making the electric fan simply an alternative to a mechanical one, not necesserily an upgrade. you'd also have to get into wiring and electrical and be counting on the electric to always work whereas with mechanical you know the fan will be on whenever the motor is runnning. from what i've read on here it sounds like gears make a huge difference as long as you make sure to chane both front and rear to avoid breaking anything. now, i've never had a dyno test but i like to think that the intake/exhaust helps the engine at least breath a little easier, and if not it at least sounds like it's making more power lol.
