Looking for a Guide to Swap out 5R55E

Hello All,

I did a couple of searches and couldn't find anything in these forums to cover what I'm looking for.

Im looking for a walkthough on how to change out my dead 5R55E transmission with another used one I found, 5R55E also... ($600 .. not cheap)

The truck is a '97 4.0L 2WD Ranger w/OD.

I am a weekend warrior and was curious about the difficulty involved in this swap as well - I Hope to knock it down in a weekend.

So any if anyone knows of a thread where this has been covered -let me know! Or if someone wants to chime in on what parts other than the new tranny I need before I start that would be great too ...

Fairly simple, I'll give you a walkthrough of what I did.

Remove exhaust Y pipe and cat section. Spray penetrant oil liberally and let it sit a while to make this easy.

Disconnect rear driveline and tie up out of the way to the frame. Pull out front driveline completely.

Disconnect oil cooler lines and all electrical connectors. Disconnect shift linkage.

Disconnect negative lead from battery. Remove starter, but you can leave cables attached.

Rotate engine with a socket on the crankshaft bolt until you can access torque convertor nut. Remove all 4 nuts.

Remove transmission to engine bolts.

Place a jack under transmission and remove support cross member.

Remove the remaining top bolts, and carefully remove transmission.

Seperate the transfer case and reverse steps to reinstall.

Be careful that the torque convertor does not slide out.
