So today, was working on a buddies truck. he got a new tacoma, and i wanted to see if it has limited slip by jacking up the wheels and spinning the tire kinda thing, one wheel went one way the other went the other, now i have a parts ranger in my lot too, it has a lsd diff, says on the door and the rear end tag, but it acts like and open. one going one way and one going the other when you turn 1 wheel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JikvViNIhqw video for reference if you dont know what i mean.

i havnt opened the pumpkin on the ranger axle to see if it has a LSD, but if the clutches were worn out would it act like an open? i was thinking of swapping it into my ranger that does have an open diff. or maybe something else is up?

also, my truck atm has 3.55 front and rear, if i put a 3.73 rear end in it, would that be to much and cause problems in 4x4?
assuming the TTB isnt a LSD from factory even though the rear end is on the parts ranger, so no point swapping the D35 over if i dont have too besides the gearing?

The Track Lock LS units are garbage IMO. Generally act like an open diff after 80K or so.

You most definitely need to regear the front to match...you can get away with things like 4.09/4.11.... but not 3.55/3.73

I have heard that some people run different front and rear gears in mud trucks but only engage 4WD in the mud. Otherwise, you need to match front and rear differential gears unless you don't mind replacing the transfer case frequently or you don't engage 4WD.

When the clutches wear out in a clutch type LS differential (Stock Ford), it acts like an open differential.

Yeah i know if youre in mud not such a big deal, but most the wheeling i do is hard ground. just figured since the dana 35 isnt anything different then the one i got except .22 more of a ratio be a pain to swap it for no reason.

Thanks, thats what i figured. friend still doesnt believe me his LSD is worn if he has one, which apperently new tacomas do.
