Getting ready to remove my rusty leaf springs hangers. (94 4x4) Just wondering if there are any suggested upgrades that could be made to beef up the rear suspension at this time. Any thoughts on good upgrades would be appreciated.

Matt

im going to be doing the same thing next weekend! let me know how it goes for you. oh are you gona be taking the bed off to do it? as for beefing up the susp im also installing 2inch shackles with the new hangers

yeah!

I removed the bed and it was such an easy job. Had a bit of trouble removing the bolt that holds the leaf spring to the mount. But other than that easy peasy leomon squeezey!!

that's a relief for me to hear. im gona be taking my bed off too so i can get to my sending unit and make the spring hanger swap easier. oh i just realized i didnt know which spring hangers you where talking about taking out lol. was it the front or the rear?

ah i see, well im most of the way through replacing the rears. It's taking longer than expected to get them done thanks to my buddy and his grinder It's faster to drill and chizle them off than to grind and chizel them. My fronts are ok for now, im just gona wire brush them and put a coat of duplicolor truck bed liner on them cause they still have plenty of metal and strength left.

Lucky SOB's, being able to take your beds off....I used a torch to cut the rivet heads off and used my air hammer to knock out the rest of the rivets. I then clamped the hanger back on 6 inches forward and redrilled the frame. I had it almost wrapped up until I realized I have to loosen my gas tank to move it over enough to get the bolts back in. I can't think of any HD upgrades unless you get a set of hangers fabbed up outta steel plate rather then the thin factory pieces.....

Bump...

Where did you guys purchase the hangers? I can't find anything on Advance Auto's website. Rock Auto has them for $15, but the shipping is as much as the hanger. Any of the chain stores stock these?

The stealership is the only place I have found them, about $25 a piece for each mount and shackle

im going to order mine from lmc truck. both need done but the left is way worse than the right. front mounts are o.k.

hanger & bushing replacement

I also need to do the same to my son's '96, one hanger is totally gone and the other is only a matter of time. I found a hanger kit here

http://stengelbros.3dcartstores.com/338-1950K_p_0-6654.html

for $121 plus shipping, seems like a decent price. Spring bushings are another $6.13 each.

My question is that I was going to buy the bushings just in case as there is a lot of rust everywhere, I'd rather play it safe.. but how do I get the old bushings out?? burn them out?? the left side is kid of close the the gas tank for my liking.... what about getting the new ones in?

Great site!

Thanks
Royce

I got mine from my local leaf spring shop, go figure they had oem ford parts in-stock! I think they nailed me for around $50 for all four, and I ordered the belltech 6400 shackles from summit.

50 for all 4 aint bad, i think its about 30 for the rears alone through lmc. im going to do all 4. i plan on keeping this truck, and while the fronts are still good, chances are they may fail someday, if im pulling the box, im only going to do it once. i may undercoat the bottom of the box too, only time you can really do it is with the bed off. any ideas on how heavy it is? i plan on using a boat winch. i have a cap on it too but i think i'll pull it first rather than try and lift the whole assembly off. ON EDIT: i was looking through the tech forums and saw something about flipping the hanger and using a long shackle. what if you did that but used the stock shackle? would you gain anything? stronger/weaker? might be easier to clean out the crap thet accumulates from the back tires and causes them to rot out? im thinking of coating my replacement parts in bedliner (wow, that stuff is 20 bucks a qt at china-mart!) since the stock brackets are junk, i may as well torch them off, then maybe i can just use a hammer and punch to drive the rivits out. on closer inspection today i found a hole in the side of the r.s. bracket as well. fronts look pretty good, if i cant get the box off i may just worry about the rears, they definetly need attention.
