I have a 08 automatic 4.0 ford ranger fx4 that has a 2-3 second lag when I give it gas anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

I'd start with regular maintenance. Clean your MAF sensor, check vacuum lines, pcv valve, etc. It's probably something stupid that you're missing (we all do it). But then again 2-3 seconds is a pretty long time.? Is it a complete lag, or is it actually struggling to rev up? Does it happen in neutral? flat/straight aways? or only under load (going up a decent grade)?

EDIT: you did specify auto...

Yes to the above.
Also check your gas pedal, I know it sounds obvious but often over looked, open the hood and watch the throttle while you press down the gas pedal(engine OFF), also if you have someone else there see if the throttle will open more even with your foot all the way down on the pedal.
The ranger gas pedal cable often stretches, so it will no longer open the throttle all the way.

On the throttle plate there is a sensor, it is called the TPS(throttle position sensor), it's works like a dimmer knob on a light, as put your foot down on the gas pedal this sensor sends the computer more voltage so computer adds more fuel and advances timing.
Unplug it's connector(engine OFF) and see if there is any corrosion inside.
These can be tested with a Volt or Ohm meter.

My bet would be the MAF sensor is dirty, common issue with that sensor, read here:

Do the throttle cable/gas pedal fix with zip ties. It fixed mine. Look in the tech section. I think that's where I found the thread with pix. Pretty simple, takes about 10 minutes and a couple of zip ties.
