Got a Jeep Commander today at work (wasn't working for Ford supposed to get me out of working an Heeps?) for a water leak inside the cab and a "sloshing" heard from the passenger seat.

Easy, evaporator box drain is plugged and the box filled with water. No problem right?

WRONGO!!! You have to take the got-danged TRANSMISSION!!!!! out to get at the drain to auger it out.

Best part, after 2.5 hours of looking for it, a call to our MOPAR store to ask where it was, 5 more hours of getting at it, and 5 minutes of looking for something to auger it out, I got a shower as soon as I put to coat hanger up there (no, still at the garage not the Planned Parenthood "clinic") I got a shower.

Now I might have to take the dash out too because, and this is the good part, the drain isn't plugged with dirt, or debris, or even a mouse nest.

Its a freaking.....

That's right. A got-danged penny that doesn't fit nicely through the drain. F-me.

I'd just put some Epoxy or silicon on it and rattle it around a little till the penny sticks and just leave it in there.

Problem solved.

Yep. That works. Or, If it were me - I'd drill the damn drain hole large enough so it WOULD fit. Hole saw FTW.

But, one must ask: how did said penny get into the ac evap box?

Same way a freaking Sugar Daddy (wrapped, and still on the stick no less) got into the oil pan on the '78 Lincoln (4500 miles, every lifter collapsed and rattling) we had to replace the engine on when I worked for Joe Mahan Ford way back in the olden days.

My guess: one of the overpaid soon-to-be-owned-by-FIAT UAW union monkeys thought it'd be funny.

Couldn't figure out what the hell was going on, kept changing oil, they kept collapsing and rattling to beat hell. We finally got the ok to replace the engine, and started tearing it apart to find a half-melted Sugar Daddy in the pan.

Oh yeah, Ford paid for that one.

I'm gonna see if I can pop the drain out from below. I think I can.

If it was my car or a friend's and not a cusomter, JB weld all the way.

That is really strange. I have 2 buddies who work for a Chrysler / Jeep dealership and they have been techs there for almost 21 years!!! I asked them about this and they said 'NO'. They have done a few Commanders and a few other Jeeps with about the same issue and they never had to remove the trans!!! Are you sure that is the only way you could fix it?? Darn!!!

So pennies blocking the drain is a common issue on these vehicles? Ask your buddies if there is a recall for that like there was for the drain dripping into the trans and flooding it on the 3.7Ls.

And no, I'm not sure that is the ONLY way to do it. If I'd known it was a hard obstruction and not a mouse nest I'd have taken the dash out instead.

This sounds more than frustrating omg.

Thanks for the entertaining story and please do let us know how u end up solving this penny problem.

I'd normally give youa penny for...........naaaaaaaaaaaa...i ain't gonna say it....

Sorry you had a snake-bit Heep to fix.......... :annoyed:

hang in there adsm_ :icon_bounceblue:

could you get needle nose pliers in there? pennies bend pretty easily.

I once had to tear a honda accord dash apart to chase a family of chipmunks out of the HVAC ducts... never found one the entire time. came back from lunch and one crawled over my shoe lol.

Hmmmmmmm.......

This plugged-drain issue may well be why there's a persistant dampness to the passenger-side carpet on our XJ.......

I do believe I will have to investigate this.

it's just the jeep's way of trying to.... pay off

eh? :D

Just don't accidently hit anything with it. You'll total it. You would think for the sher size of them they can take a low speed collision with small car but you'd be wrong. my wifes girlfriend was pulling outta of ally didn't look both ways and hit a honda civic that had just pulled outta there driveway niether was going faster than 3 mph. Her insurence totalled the jeep the chassis was twisted all the way to the back even the lift gate was out of alignment. The civic drove away with a busted fender, hood and headlight.

She went and bought a compass with the insurence money.....

a 3mph collision set off the airbags?
