Am I the only one that thinks the seat looks entirely too close to the steering wheel? Awesome looking truck BTW. Its gotta be a pain to steer rapidly with the wheel that close.... right?

thanks for callin me out im not the tallest dude ever (5'7") my arms have a slight bend to em but no, its very comfortable to drive for me

the truck got a few updates and more trips under its belt. got a new wheel and tire combo. 15" method bead locks and 35" bfg baja TA tires. i absolutely LOVE the way these tires work in the dirt compared to the all terrains
the biggest update is the engine im working on for it. scored a decent condition sohc v6 for it from a friend for nothing so im doing some timing chains and alot of cleaning up on the outside of it and going to swap it into the ranger since ive been learning it can be ran on the obd1 harness. should be a nice power increase over the ohv so im really excited for that!

i have no links to share. my tuner got me in contact with a guy who did it. i will be making a DETAILED thead with lots of pictures and all info once its running.
But i did some eye balling and heres what ive gathered so far.

blocks are basically identical. motormount bolts are in the same spots.
factory mounts the oil pan will just barely hit the crossmember, but with auto fab mounts itll clear.
all the obd1 sensors from a 4.0ohv match mounting wise onto the sohc, theyre just in different spots
so IAC
crank sensor
coolant temp sensor
maf
those swap over from your ohv to sohc with wiring lengths changed.

cam position sensor will not swap over and im not sure how to wire one in because the two operate completely differently, this is no issue, can be ran without it and / or tuned out by a tuner so im not even worried about it.
if you run it without a cam position sensor, you will have a CEL.
the coils are exactly the same. doesnt matter which you use
injector wiring plugs TBD
alternator tbd
all egr and smog bs im not figuring out cuz im not running it
nor do i have ac so ill be no help there
custom power steering lines will have to be made.
bell housing bolt pattern is the same. so yes i will be keeping the c4

I built my EEC-IV SOHC about 10 years ago, I started off with no can sync. It ran fine, but without the can signal it was batch fire. I ran it for about 6-8 months like that until I had an epiphany... make a cam sync.
Take an oil pump drive plug from a SOHC. Take a cam sync from a OHV. Disassemble both of them. Cut the bottom of the synchronizer off. Machine both pieces so they can be pressed together. Press them together and weld it. Reassemble you new SOHC can synchronizer with the parts from the OHV can sync. Drop it in, set it with the tool, plug in the sensor.
I ran it like that for about a year until I blew up the 3rd 4r55e... That was the last time that truck saw the road with a gas engine. Next step was drop a 4BT in it.
I’ll have to check my workshop... I think I still have the second SOHC cam sync I machined... I never got around to welding it together.

Another thing you have to watch out for. The OHV and SOHC crank sensors use the same connector, but the wires are reversed. (Depending on the year.) When it’s all installed, if you have no spark... de-pin the crank sensor plug and swap the wires.

NICE WORK ON THE CAM SYNC. i knew there would be a way to do it, but my tuner said hell just tune it out so i forgot all about it. let me know if you got it and want to sell it though! id probably put it to good use!

If you “just tune it out” The ECM won’t know if the cylinder it on the compression or exhaust stroke. That’s fine for the wasted spark system, it fires at both times anyway. BUT, how will it know when to fire the injector? It will have to batch fire the injectors.

@RacinNdrummin put a 4.0 SOHC in a Bronco II using a 4.0 OHV computer, harness, and 1997 fuel rail.

These swaps have been done, but it just occured to me that we don't have an article in our tech Library on how to do it. What if I want to replaced the tired 4.0 OHV in my 1996 Ranger with a 4.0 SOHC? This topic has been discussed before. We need to start collecting the info and put together an article.

ill work on a full write up and parts used. im keeping track of everything i do cost wise just for personal info, but i think i could manage a full write up about it. ill take lots of pictures when i start installing it.

also, got the engine done lastnight. i did timing chains, guides, tensioners, full gasket kit (except for heads) and a TON of cleaning and paint. i found an aluminum thermostat housing so i replaced the cheesy plastic one with that and installed a new water pump
also got a new power steering pump. it slipped out out my hand yesterdat as i was taking it out of the box and landed right on my cell phone and smashed it to hell....GREAAATTTTTTT..

Isn't the 4.0 SOHC wider than the OHV? I think @RacinNdrummin had to modify the heater box in his Bronco II, but this engine came in the 2001 Ranger, so I wouldn't think there would be a clearance issue in the 1993-2011 Ranger.

the top end is a little wider and i did read he had to modify the heater box. i dont have any of that to worry about as i dont have ac or heat.
