JBA Header "tick"

Hello,
I recently bought a pair of JBA Shorty headers for my 4.0 SOHC. I installed them and I have a horrible "tick" on the driver side. It is very similar to an exhaust leak. I have felt all around the headers and there are no leaks. I am stumped. I know that headers expose more engine noise but this is really loud. Any suggestions? If there is no solution would header wrap muffle it a bit?

Welcome to the forum.

Way back when I was a kid I had a 71 Torino GT. I like all kids wanted to make a race car out of it so I bought a set of used Cyclone headers off a guy I knew. Even though they were installed correctly and with new gaskets and the special bolts they had leak ticks. You couldn't feel them but you could certainly hear them. After about 3 months of that I broke down and bought a set of Blackjack AK5000s and put them on. Amazing ... no more problems. I don't know the brand of header you are referring to but maybe they aren't built right.

I just looked at heir website and they don't look like Cyclone quality (poor). Maybe there was a manufacturing defect in the set you bought. Also are you sure you didn't damage a gasket when you installed them. Exhaust port leaks will squeeze out through a scratch the size of a dog hair.

I had a set of JBA's for a 3.0, that one of the tubes cracked, they are also really hard to get to seal on the stock Y pipe, You might check around the collector, and loosen both sides at the collector and tighten the drivers side first.

Well I figured it out, It was where all three pipes come into the collector. Right in the center it wasn't welded the entire way, which is rare for JBA. Any who, thanks for the help.

I have learned that unless you are working on a 5.4 3V, if it sounds like you have a leak, you have a leak.

I recently saw a 2013 with a Borla cat-back system with the X-pipe not welded correctly. You could hear the leak and smoke just poured out the top of the X-pipe when I put the smoker on it.

Good you figured it out. That is weird for jba, theyre one of the top brands in my opinion.
