Is the 4.0 clutch swap worth it?

I read the tech article about swapping the standard 8 7/8" clutch for the 2.9 to the 10"...

Is it worth it? I don't plan on EVER going bigger than maybe a 32" inch tire and I don't climb any rocks bigger than a microwave, just trail riding and camping.

:dunno:

unless yours is trashed. no.

i have busted 4.0 clutch rings just like the little guys.....though that was with a 4.0 pushing on it and not a 2.9

I think it would last longer. I would swap it out for the luk pro gold 4.0 clutch. Why put a 2.9 clutch back in if you have options to one that lasts behind a bigger engine?

Bobbywalter... read your sig... THAT' WHY YOU BREAK WEIRD STUFF :P

Good points but I'm actually doing the a4ld to FM 146 swap. So everything is out right now and I'm in the parts ordering phase. The thing that's holding me back is be having to get a new starter which is more money that I don't have to spend.

Yes, the 4.0 clutch swap is worth it, especially if you have to buy all but one of the parts already.

I did it when I needed a clutch, and a trans, and I drove it into the garage, drove it back out, worlds of difference.

If you tow or haul anything, especially anything heavy, it makes a big difference starting out.

I trust your word, man. While I don't intend to really haul anything, if it improves my ability to put that much more power to the wheels, and provide me with better capabilities to pull someone out, then it's a go.

Thanks for all the help, guys!

i definitely agree that upgrading now is ideal.

but i would wait till my clutch was trashed before i just replaced it otherwise, i read your question as you were just going to swap it out for the sake of upgrade.

Ah, 10-4. I should've been more specific. Yeah, everything's already pulled out and whatnot.

The improved pedal feel of the 4.0L clutch (along with the heavier flywheel) I think makes the swap worth it alone (not near as grabby, you actually can modulate it more easily without stalling the engine).

Agreed, you got it all apart, just do it.

Beware the "new" china made 4.0 flywheels.. They suck ass.

Can this be done on the 2.8 engine?

If the clutch assembly of the 2.8 and 2.9 are the same I don't see why not. LookUp the clutch kit part numbers for the 2.8 and 2.9. If there the same then should be doable

FYI just did the search and found out the kits are the same so anyone that wants the 4.0 setup in a 2.8L it is doable. Sweet, may do that at some point if my B2 stays around that long LOL.

:) good to know. also on rock auto just try to buy som of the performance stuff or name brand.

Specifically I and other will recommend luk or luk pro gold. Sachs.

I like my luk pro gold. Read about it its a good clutch. OEM feel with greater strength. Only a little more $$
